Is this noise normal?

I've owned my 2002 4Runner for about 2 months now. Had the timing belt, drive belts, idler bearings, spark plugs and other stuff replaced.

Since I've owned it I've noticed a sound at idle. It can only be described as a rapid and continuous "pop pop pop". About the same rate as rpm. Put your lips together and make a popping sound as fast as you can and it's about there. It's not loud or obnoxious. But it's odd to me and a bit annoying. It seems louder when the weather is cold, but is there when the engine warms up and weather is warmer.

Is this normal? Is it a sign of impending doom or the coming of the anti-Christ?

Any insight is appreciated.

Yeah I might guess a slight exhaust leak.

I should have added that I only hear the noise at idle.

An exhaust leak crossed my mind, but I would have thought I'd smell it.

The fact that it is more prominent when cold makes me think exhaust as well.

I have the same noise and I am convinced its an exhaust leak somewhere on the passenger side near the firewall. I have yet to locate it.

Faulty EGR valve? (Not sure our engines have one though, haven't had to troubleshoot the engine.)
