newbie introduction / question

Hey, I'm Scott and I'm... a newbie. There. I said it.

So I've had this '97 4runner for several months, and like every other care i've owned, I'm fairly obsessed with it. I'm a sports car guy, (you can check out my GTI here) and not too much into offroading, but I thought this forum would still play nice with a guy who wants 22" chrome rims and a billet grill instead of a Warn winch and 34" mudders.

Anyhow, until I save up the money for the 22's, I've got to deal with the stock rims, and to do that I need to do something about this:

Any suggestions?

Hey Scott,

Welcome to the forum! You'll love this place, it's full of great people. There's quite a few guys here who are not interested in off-roading, but are interested in 'street-suping' up their Runners. Jason B. has great, quality accessories for sale to make your Runner look street-smart: http://get.to/jason

As for the hub covers, mine are fading too and I was giving this some thought as well. I think they are plastic but we could sand them down slightly nonetheless, so the paint will stay on. Otherwise, if you can find a hi-temperature spray that matches the silver (or another good color for a contrast look). Hi-temp spray paint is self-priming I believe, so no sanding would really be necessary.

Do a search on this forum, I believe one person did a write-up (probably butnut) for touching up the wheel hub covers and making the Toyota symbol a different color than the rest of it. Once you find that, there may be more information there on how to paint the rest of it.

Al

Found it for ya. Here's the thread regarding your question:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...ight=hub+paint

And here's a pic of Philly's wheel hub cover:

And here's the write-up on how to do it:

Philly or butnut: What should we use to paint the entire cover?

Hello Scott, and welcome to the forum.
Like Al mentioned there are a few folk's who have painted their center caps.

Take a look at our Tech section listed on the forums index page.
Then look for Butnut's paint article.
He explains how to "spruce" up your caps.

I believe Philly on here has also done his caps as his avatar he uses shows a nice looking cap.

PS, looks like Al and I were thinking the same thing at the same time again

Thanks for the quick replies! As far as this being a great forum, I've been lurking for several days, and thought everybody was really cool, so I joined.

Philly, I guess it's hard to tell from the photo but the silver paint is flaking off the center caps in a big way, leaving the bare plastic base to show through. It's fairly ugly in person, trust me.

Your center caps look great though... did your Runner come with the chrome caps?

Hey dude. Welcome here! It is a nice place to be. Cool people and lots of help. I really like what Philly has done w/ his caps, and if I had some to paint, I would. They look good and being red, that is my favorite color, I really like it! Check it out and let us know what you do! :fireman:
