I flipped it on Sunday and reset the CEL with a reader. She was fine for the rest of the day on Sunday and then the CEL came back on Monday morning. She lives about 90 minutes from me, but we'll get together some point soon and I can read the CEL.

I'm not worried, I'll figure it out.

Christian,

As much as I'd like to, I'm pretty swamped and will be until the end of November. I'm launching a new food brand in Korea in November so unfortunately I cannot join!

Hi, Ive been reading posts from this forum and have learned alot about my truck. I found a little article in a mag about PCV breathers which i thought was interesting.

"a significant amount of pressurized air and oil vapor are blown out the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) breather valve. This is normally plumbed back into the intake, which is good for keeping the atmosphere free of oil vapor, but not so good for your intake system. Oil tends to accumulate in any low points of the intake."

and the article had this little warning at the end of it:

"Mind you, venting your crankcase to atmosphere is against the law for street cars, but for cars that will only see track use, you can install this teeny, fully functional K&N filter. It looks just like the big filter you have on your intake, but scaled down. NOT FOR USE ON CARS TO BE DRIVEN ON PUBLIC ROADS."

Our trucks are mostly used for offroad anyways

Christian, et al:

I finally got around to installing the Type "O" gasket mod today. Sheesh, I almost forgot about it and also forgot the PCV valve replacement (more on that...read on).

I did not completely remove the throttle body. I removed a few vacuum hoses, removed the air duct that connects the TB to the MAF, and unscrewed 2 bolts/nuts from the TB itself. That gave me enough room to remove the TB from the plenum and remove the stock metal gasket.

Cleaning the TB was probably much easier w/ it partially off than attached. I'd do it that way again. I just simply put a plastic drop cloth over the rest of the engine bay and cleaned away.

After installing everything (well almost everything), I started it up. Man, my idle shot up to 2,200! I read somewhere that I might have some trouble starting it up, but it was quite the opposite. Furthermore, whenever I pressed on the gas, i would hear a hissing sound---definitely a missed vaccuum line.

I removed the air duct and lo and behold, I forgot to attach the vaccuum hose to the PCV valve. I didn't connect it b/c I was *going* to replace the old PCV valve w/ a new one. I guess I got a little excited after re-attaching the TB! In anycase, removing the PCV valve and replacing it was a cinch.

My idle now is about 200 rpm higher (was at 1,300 rpm). Not bad. Taking around the block, the throttle response is definitely more 'crisp'.

Unfortunately, I did not have my camera w/ me this weekend, so no write up today. However, I'll do one by the end of the year. This is an easy mod that will take about 30-45 min.

Thanks, Christian.

Bob

I use carb/choke cleaner to clean my throttle body, but there is also "throttle body" cleaner available at the parts stores. Use electrical contact cleaner to clean your MAF.

Cubera,

Unfortunately, no. As I said above, I dind't have my digital camera with me at the time. However, I will do it again in December for the sole purpose of documenting it.

Hey, there's a guy who did document this already. Its in this thread, i think. its VERY easy.

I did not clean the maf b/c I didn't have any wire cleaner or whatever its called. I did use STP Throttle body cleaner instead of Carb cleaner. My OEM manual says to use carb cleaner. However, the TB cleaner worked just fine.

Mileage report: since doing the TB cleaning, changing my plugs, my plug wires, clenaing the inside of the air intake tube, re-oiling my Amsoil airfilter and changing out the PCV valve, my mileage has gone up 1 mpg from ~16.3 mpg to ~17.4. As you may recall, my mileage went down from the 18s to 16.3 after switching to 32s. Imagine if i had done this BEFORE the 32s!

Cool thanx for the info. fellas.

I just ordered the o gasket from christian and will tackle it and the whole intake cleaning job and tune up when it arrives.

I'm getting about 16 mpg here also and like to improve that.

What wires and plugs did you install or recommend- Bob 98 or whoever with a 98 rig?

What fuel system cleaning additives would you recommend also?

I recommend stock wires (are you sure you need them?) and stock plugs - unless you are SC'd.
