Post a pic of what you are talking about. I think you mean the large hose with a metal fitting that goes in front of the TB on the backside of the intake track. Correct?

 

yes! that is the line I refer to. That is the other half of the PCV system. In a functional system that line allows crankcase gasses to be drawn thru the PCV valve when the butterfly is shut without putting the crankcase in a vacuum. If you have a breather, suddenly airflow is reversed in a WOT scenario. You will be sucking air into the breather, thru the crankcase, and then into the TB at the metal fitting on the rubber intake hose.

 

I will have to take another look at what you are talking about. I agree with you though, whatever it is, it leaves some oil residue in my intake track. I dont like that very much!

I will let you know if I find anything with mod potential.

 

Christian- My only concern with plugging the PCV valve inlet is building too much pressure. I had an S-10 once that I rebuilt the motor (big surprise with a chevy) and put chrome vaulve covers on it. THe problem I had was that they weren't baffled and put breather caps in and plugged the pcv valve inlet that came out of the throttle body. The problem I was having was leaks. Granted Chevy's leak like a spaghetti strainer but it was really bad. After replacing the valve pan gaskets a million times I went back to my old valve pans and put the PCV valve back in and it eliminated the problem. I was so bad that they would actually suck the gasket in and pull it into the head.

Now I'm not sure how toyotas are but it's something to think about expecially if your noticing any wettness around the intake or heads. Just thought I'd pass on some info I learned the hard way.

I'm curious about something, and it may just be me needing to be re-schooled.

I always thought that "PCV" stood for Pollution Control Valve" and that it's purpose was to keep the environmentally bad crankcase fumes from getting out into the atmosphere.

I'm not a Greenpeacer, but I'm wondering if your PCV mod would create issues with passing a "visual" smog test.

Actually Mark, your thinking (or what you heard) makes some sense. While yes, it is called a Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve, it does in fact emit some "raw" fumes into the atmosphere.

I am still torn on this PCV mod. I mean I honestly didnt notice any gain from it...that I am aware of anyway (because I did everything at once). So was spending $11 on the breather worth it? Probably not. I dunno. The good news is I can go back to stock in about 5 minutes. So, to answer your question, you could in fact get by on a visual smog check by going back to stock.

I am still collecting data on this one...



BTW: I will let you know when I get the gaskets...I dont know what is taking them so long.

 

I went back to the stock PCV system and ditched the Type R breather. I did not notice any significant gain from this mod directly, and the raw exhaust smell at idle was getting annoying.

Just thought I would send out a FYI.

PS: Anybody want to buy a breather?

 

Cool. I actually looked for a breather the other day but didn't spend a lot of time doing so. I kinda' passed on the idea.


I think I'm gonna pull my old TB gasket today and see about trimming it out to a full circle. Not to diss your want of distributing them, but I figured it's worth a look at doing.

I think I read someone else here having done that?

Hey Christian;

As you know, I got mine and FunRunner's last week. I put FR's on Saturday (cold, wet, rainy day!) and had to tweak it on Sunday (cold, wet, rainy day = had gasket turned 90 degrees! DOH!). She's throwing a CEL now, and I'll take a look at that this week.

As for mine... well, let's say that I have an extra one. I'd forgotten that Helix provides an "O" gasket with the PowerTower.

I did that same thing once. Kinda sounds like a big cammed V8 huh?

Just flip the gasket around and pull the neg battery cable. That should reset the CEL.
