New Head Gasket new rattle???

okay so i got this 4runner for 200 bucks went got the heads shaved and installed the new head gasket, okay after i got the timing right i started it up and i have this nasty rattle coming from the engine bay before the new head gasket it didnt have that rattle? it blows smoke like crazy too, when the heads were off i checked the pistons and they seemed fine no excessive wear or nothing so do inow need to get new heads??? or does it sound like timing belt rattle??? i didnt change the belt because it looked new but now im thinking i gonna change that to see if it will help. could getting the heads shaved caused this problem??? thanks for all input

Could be a cracked block or head. Or you didnt get the head gaskets sealed up good. Do a leakdown test to determine what cylinder/s are the problem.

I would not bother with the timing belt untill you figure out why it is burning coolant.

Does it continue to smoke if you let it run? Every timing belt job I have ever done has had coolent in everything and takes about a min to clear up. Shaving the head could have made your engine interfearence Did you turn the cam while the belt wansnt hooked up? On toyota engines for some readson when you change timing belts the tensioner pully will go bad at the same time. Dont know why but thats something to check too.

Good luck

Did you count your wrenches and sockets when you were done?
