New clutch advice?
Just had a new OEM clutch installed in my 98 Taco. Someone correct me if I am wrong, don't new clutches release closer to the floorboard and then after worn release higher? My clutch releases almost at the top end of my pedal travel. I have run aftermarket clutches in the past and was wondering if Toyota OEM is somehow different. Thx for the help.

Mike,
You are correct about your clutch analysis. The healthier the clutch, the closer to the floor they release. Is your new clutch an Aisin? Remember all of the Tacoma clutches are controlled hydraulically by the clutch master cylinder. They should release close to the same position for the entire life of the clutch. The clutch hydraulic master cylinder compensates as the clutch ages. This is how it should work in theory. Your clutch hydraulic master cylinder sounds like it is not functioning correctly if your clutch is releasing at the end of its travel and its brand new.
Good Luck.

Thx Paul for the reply. It's funny, the "new" clutch actually feels like my old one, hope I did not get taken to the cleaners. Is there any maintenance that can be done on the master?

Does it slip at all if you are in a high gear and stomp on the throttle?
While unlikely if done by a good mechanic, it's possible the friction disc was put in backwards which would allow only half of the friction surface being used.

Mike,
I hope you did not get taken to the cleaners as well. The reply fierohink gave you is a good starting point as far as if you got taken to the cleaners. As fierohink has said, you first want to find out if the clutch slips in high gear. You can check this by driving it up a long grade in high gear without much throttle. If the engine revs up, and there is no increase in forward motion, your clutch is slipping.
I left you some contact information if you want to talk about this one on one in your mail box.
Good Luck.
