Need trany help

I have a 96 3.4L with an auto. We can get it to go into rev just like normal but when we go into drive we have to put the peddle all the way down to even get it to move.
We have had two codes come up for a while. P0770 and p0773. We have been driving with these codes like this for about a month. I can not find a shop here in denver that doesn't know what is wrong with it besides the codes.
So what are your guys thoughts on what it could be or what I should do?

pull the pan and there right there...but i would test them first. im not sure if the 3rd gens are different that 2nd gen internals

They are a little different but the idea is the same.

Here's a 3rd gen auto with the pan removed (you can see the solenoids in the lower portion):


Those codes are:
P0770 Shift Solenoid E Malfunction
P0773 Shift Solenoid E Electrical

First question is did you ever overheat the tranny or burn the fluid?

Second try using the shifter to manually move it into 1st......does it hesitate?
Next, try using the shifter to manually move it into 2st......does it hesitate?
Next, try using the shifter to manually move it into Drive......does it hesitate? (I assume yes)

This may help to pinpoint the issue if it is a solenoid and it is getting locked out of a gear.

So I would say that toyotaoffroad91 is giving you good advice and that you should definately start by testing the solenoids (they are pretty easily removed and bench tested). If the solenoids prove to be fine you may need to look at the wiring from the ECU to the tranny as a possible source of the issue. The P0770 code has also been associated with debris getting stuck in the valve body and causing the shift valves to stick (usually the code will appear by itself though....the presence of the P0773 code makes it sound to me like the issue is with the 1-2 shift solenoid(s) system itself). I remember in the past someone having a similar issue and I don't think they ever posted the solution if they ever did finally fix the problem.

The best thing would be to go online and download the FSM for your vehicle and follow the FSM diagnostic tests for those trouble codes. The test for the P0770 code basically requires checking the shift solenoid itself, which also requires dropping the pan and removing the solenoid. The inspection for the P0773 code is basically measuring resistance at the ECM.

Thanks for all the post I am still checking to see what is causing the codes. Where is the best place to get some new solenoids? I will keep you guys up dated on the progress of the problem.

Ok so we have gone through test the shifting. It shifts fine when doing it manual. It is only slow when get below 20 deg. out side over night. I went to the Toyota shop and they say that they need the VIN# and they have to hook it up to the computer to ID the problem. They were saying that the codes it is pulling mean nothing. Is this true?

Should I just consider doing a flush and clear the codes and see if that help the problem?
They were also telling me that it might be more worth it to replace the tranny. What do you guys and gals think about replacing it?
Or should I just look at replacing the siloniodes?

What are your thoughts or pro's and con's of doing each?

shift sylenoid

I have a 96 4 runner V6 with the same problem. In 1st and 2nd, it seems to shift fine, but once I hit drive, and especially overdrive, it acts as if you have a huge slippage.

The code I pulled was P0758 - shift sylenoid B-electrical. I am guessing this is the same issue as above? And guesses on which of hte 3 sylenoids I would need to replace?

I am also assuming this is not a large job that would need specialty tools? Thanks guys.

Hey, NewB here. Just bought a T100 with the same prob. P0770. I dropped the pan and bench tested the solenoid (SL). I'm confused cause the instructions i have been looking at say the solenoid is supposed to hold pressure (meaning the solenoid valve is closed) when not energized, and open when energized (12V). My solenoid was open and then closed when energized (and did hold 71psi of air pressure). Is this solenoid backwards? Faulty? or am i reading the instructions wrong?

Welcome to YT. What instructions are you reading? Hopefully its the T-100 FSM. I doubt anything faulty would change the solenoid from normally closed to normally open. More likely the instructions were backwards or your valve body design is different than the instructions.

The T-100 was kind of a strange animal, different in many ways.

I also checked the two other shift solenoids and they are normally closed, unlike the sl solenoid i have.
Any links to the T100 FSM?
