Need Toyota 22re Help! Pics Inside!

I just picked up an 87 4runner with a 22re. cylinder head gasket was blown and the previous owner had taken it apart. well i had the head rebuilt and i started putting it back together. ive gotten it almost finished but have come to a problem. there is a smog pipe that gets bolted to the exaust manifold, from there it bolts to a 2nd pipe and seems to have to hook around to the left around the back of the head and seems to bolt some where on the intake, but i have found no place for it to go. this has been holding me up for days! anyone have an idea ,or can some one look at their truck and give me some direction? maybe im missing some parts since the distributor was missing and i had to buy a new one. any help is APPRECIATED greatly! thanks alot, jim

I found a reference to it in my Haynes repair manual on Page 188.
It appears to be part of the AS (Air Suction) System. That end attaches to a AS Reed Valve. The AS system draws air into the exhaust manifold to accelerate Oxidateion, using vacuum generated by the exhaust pulsation in the exhaust manifold.

If you want a picture of it then I will scan it in for you. There is not much to see. That end attaches to the AS Reed valve..then over to a VSV, then to some vacuum switch on the side of the engine.

Another hose comes off that Reed valve, then over the engine to a Resonator and then it looks like into the air filter assembly.

Let me know, maybe that can get you started.

Yep. It's part of the Air Suction system. If I didn't have to get an emissions check, I'd leave the whole thing off and block off the holes :-)

To find where it bolts, stand at your passenger side front fender, facing the intake manifold. Follow the intake runner for the rear (#4) cylinder with your hand - almost brushing the firewall. Right at the very bottom of the curving runner, you'll feel 4 bolts. 2 hold the reed valve to the bottom of the intake and 2 are the bolts that bolt the hard pipe to the reed valve. They are a bitch to get wrenches on, so have an assortment of shortie-style wrenches on hand.

Let me know if this helps.

That link won't work unless you have Adobe Reader installed. Go to www.adobe.com and download the free reader. It will take a few minutes for the document to download...longer if you have dialup.

Let me know.

Did 86-87 22RE's even come w/ an air suction/injection system? I thought only 22R's had 'em? IIRC, my '86 FSM only showed the system on the carb and not the EFI. Could be wrong though. Unfortunately, I don't have the FSM w/ me to verify.

I've got three 86 22RE's, and none of them have this circuit.

My 86 22RE doesn't have those tubes either, it has plates on the exhaust manifold that blocks the holes. My 84 22R does have the tubes.

He may have a late 1987 model of the engine. Per my Hayne's guide it states that this was typical of the 1988 engine models and later.
