Need more power

I'm new here, just registered. I'm lookin for simple ways to increase HP in my 93 v6 runner. I installed a K&N filter but i read bad things about it in this forum. Am I paranoid or is the engine hella loud too? My friend said it sounded like a diesel. If there's any way to quiet her down, i'd appreciate it.

Yeah, my engine is loud as all hell too. The thing with the 3.0 is that it is not a powerhouse. It is a beast, a great engine, but a beast. Very reliable, but it is tough to get it to have more power. The easiest way to give it some more pep is to add a cat-back exhaust. The stock size of the pipe is around 1-7/8". I got a 2-1/4" cat-back exhaust put on mine and there is more pep now. I have a Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler on and love it. It has a great sound and givesthe Runner more balls off the line. Other than that, a major engine mod is going to give you power, but you are looking at some big $$$. There are others here who will help you out, but I just wanted to chime in and tell you my info.

Welcome to the site by the way. We are all here to help and have fun! :fireman:

A cat back would not only help the pep, but would also help mask the engine noise being created. Ive got a 3rd gen, so this is a part question for the 3L ppl, but if your engine fan is being driven all the time (the 3rd gens cut out after sort period after starting unless needed) then I would highly recomend an electric fan. It will add pep, and GREATLY help engine noise (assuming it is on all the time)
Good luck!

Any idea where I an get an electric fan, I've thought about that to get rid of the noise cuz it seemed like that's where all the noise was comin from. Just dont know where to order one, and anyone know a good website for me to go to to get a cat back exhaust

Flex-A-Lite makes a fan for your vehicle. Depending on your application it may add a few hp to your 4Runner.

I think Summit Racing carries quite a few models so you may try them, or buy it locally from a map of dealers on Flex-A-Lite's US Dealer Page.

I noticed my 93 being noisy too when I first got it. It quieted down though after about a block away from my house. I figured out that when the engine is cold it only does this. So what I do is leave it in 1st gear and slowly but somewhat aggresively drive down the street and before the end of the block it quiets down and runs smooth and quiet there after. I always wondered about that! Mine has the electric fan off center in front of the radiator and it only comes on when it is really hot outside, or when the AC is being used.

I always let my car warm up for like 5 minutes just to be safe . . . car still rowrs like a monster tho. I listen to my friends 2000 accord coupe, that v6 is the quietest thing I've ever heard. I'm so jealous. But at least my car sounds powerful

I have a 1992 3.0 4x4 I installed a flex a lite fan and recently change all my fluids in mean ALL MY OIL tranny fluid and GrEASE to royal purple and I can outrun my neighbors 2000 4runner.

as for the noise now that I have the Flex a Lite electric fan my engine makes less noise as a matter of fact when the fan cranks up it is louder that the engine.

I cant wait for my header, free flow cat and cat back exhaust.

There must be something wrong with your neighbors 2000 4 runner. I too have the 3.0L in my 90 4 runner automatic. I found a spot close to my house where I could start off from a stop and "race" to a highway sign. After having to have valvework done (130K miles) and having the heads ported and polished and the cams reground by DOA racing, and having a 2.5" exhaust (from the exhaust manifold back) , free flow cat and dynomax muffler installed, I could top out at around 65mph at my "drag strip". I dont know how long this distance is yet. I test drove a 2000 4 runner 2 wheel drive with 3.4L automatic and had to take it to my "drag strip" and see what it would do. It went to at least 80mph. The differences were 90 4 runner: 3.0L, geared for 225 75 15 tires but running 30 9.5 15 on aluminum rims, and 4x4.
The 2000 4 runner: 3.4L, running origional 235 tires, 4x2.
Ive decided to be happy with the power the 3.0 has and not to be in a hurry and to not expect it to outrun anything. I cannot see how just changing fluids will allow a 3.0 to out run a 3.4 off the line. Its just not possible.

Agreed
However changing all your fluids religously will greatly extend the life of your truck.

Whitey and others,

Most likely your engine sounds louder to you when you initially start it up, and for the next few minutes, is because the RPM's are higher because your engine is trying to get up to optimal operating temperature as fast as it can. Once it gets up to that temperature, it should idle around 750 rpm's or so. Just wanted to let you know that it is normal for it to be louder when you first start it due to engine rpm's being higher.

I know it idles around 750, that's why i let it warm up for so long. It's still loud as hell tho. It quiets down a lil, but i've had a neighbor complain to me once when i was sitting in the driveway warming my car up. It's an Irvine thing, they think they own the world and any lil noise will set them off.

try the yellow pages first... get it done at a local shop and get the muffler from summit racing (dynomax seems to be the most liked on this forum) you will be happy you did.

I did beat a 2000 5 speed 4x4 in a quarter mile not by merely changing the fluids but also replacing the stock fan with a flex lite and replacing spark plugs and wires. I also replaced all pulleys belts thoughly cleaned the trottle body and added a K&N filter.
I'm telling you changing all your dino, TF and grease to Syn makes a difference.
my neighhbors 4runner is standard so it was probably the driver and not the runner Right!
