Need help quick - 85 runner

alright, here is my problem. hopefully somebody can help me. i just bought this truck on Friday of last week. 85 4Runner, EFI, blah blah blah. i took it wheeling today with a friend, great. on the way back home, only 1 mile away from my house, something made a huge bang sound. sounded like it came from the front end. anyways, made the truck just swerve all over the road in the middle of traffic. there was a lot of drag coming form something, but i do not know what. the hubs were free, and in H2. i'm not too familiar with the straight axle in front, but i've done a lot of work on an 87 truck. either way, we were able to drive it out of the street and into a Church parking lot. had a lot of trouble with that b/c it would try to lock up on us and we would have to baby it to get it to move, back and forth. like i said, i just bought it a week ago today and kinda annoyed. if anyone could help me with stuff to look for. i am going to try and tow it to my house tomorrow and look it all over. i could not see anything wrong with the exterior at first glance as it was raining outside by the time i got it off the street.

Thanks in advance

When it had drag, was it pulling to one side or just like it didn't want to roll? I would jack up the front axle and see if either wheel had resistance to rolling. If so, I would pull the wheel on the dragging side and inspect the caliper, pads and rotor. Might have a bad hub that has not disengaged also. Might be wheel bearings.

Post back as you troubleshoot.

When I buy a vehicle, I dump all the fluids and replace with new and repack the wheel bearings (unless the PO has receipts showing it has been done recently).

it wasn't pulling to either side after we were able to stop the truck. when it popped, it pulled to whatever side it wanted to irratically. when trying to move it, it felt like something was catching and stopping it. and at time, it would stop completely. i will get to it tomorrow and pull everything apart and inspect. hopefully i will be able to get it home without calling a wrecker.

update...

i went back to my truck because i did not want to leave it as there have been a lot of thefts in the area recently. got in it and it decided to move. so i called a friend to follow me a little bit. started making a loud grinding/roaring noice. makes me think it's a bearing. i think someone already said that though. i'll start ripping it apart tomorrow. if anymore ideas pop up. please shoot them at me.

Chad
