Need advice on 87 4runner please.

Hey guys, just founf the site. Very nice. I ran across a 1987 4runner for sale. Its an SR5, 4wd, it only has 83k miles on it. This lady is a professor at a local college, she drives like 10 miles to her job. The outside is in pretty good shape, a couple of dings that it. The inside is freakin clean. The front seats are in as good of shape as the rear. It looks like nobody has ever been in this car. The only sign of age is the door handles have faded. It is going to need about 500.00 worth of tuneup parts etc to get it up to snuff for my standards. She wont take less than 6k for it. There is not one 4runner for sale at all in the Atlanta market to compare against. What are your thoughts.....

Good find
6k seems a liitle high. I purchased mine for $4,000.
Mine is in real good shape. I don't think i would go above $5,000 for it.
I know you said that there isn't another 4runner to compare but i would look on http://www.traderonline.com and expand your search. See if anything turns up.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

P.s. Welcome to our little world

I agree, $6K is a little high, BUT it does have low miles.
If she only drives it 10-20 miles a day, I would look into the tranny fluid, oil (possible sludge), brakes, etc., plus all the little tune-up stuff like you said. Find out if she has maintenance records. This will tell you if the oil was changed regularly, when the timing chain was replaced/adjusted last, and what other issues she might have had with it.
Find out Kelley Blue Book value. Then find the NADA value. If you can't find that online, most banks will be able to give you a NADA quote. Some will even be able to print a quote for you.

Good luck!

I paid 5800 for my 94 5speed v6. Single previous owner (doctor from CT), garage kept, no rust. All available options except leather. 130k miles. Not a dent or scratch, 4x4, perfect interior, full maint. records including headgasket recall, new 31's. Thats all I can think of now for my truck. As for yours, I would try to bargain her down, but it sounds like you found an exceptionally good 87'. Good luck shopping... I've had good luck with autotrader for my last 3 vehicles.

if you plan on using this as a hard core wheeling truck you might want to hold of on buying an 87 and try and find an 85 or i think even 86 , which has the solid front axle , which in tur nwill end up saving you lots of work and money i nthe long run , but thats only if you plan on doing some hard core wheeling , if you wanna use if for trail riding and not do muc htoo it , then its a good year , i personally dont really think the price seems that bad for the shape and miles it has ,but maybe things are cheaper down south.

GEEEEZ!! 6K? talk about knowing what youve got!! She's not the college shop auto teacher, is she? My dad had one.. bought it new. If I remember correctly, he paid 11k for it. In just 4 short years, that thing is gonna be 20 yrs old!

Toyo, only you can decide if it is worth it or not. This past summer I purchased an '88 4Runner with 70,000 miles. Tons of new or redone parts, as the previous owner worked at Toyota. It is in A+++ shape and I paid $6900. I do live in Alaska, and things DO cost more up here....but it is the BEST vehicle I have owned and I would buy it again for that same price any day!!!

It is all about how you feel about it. If you are going to pay top dollar, be sure it is in good shape and you won't be sorry!! After all, you should get another 200,000 out of that vehicle!!

Good luck....AkBillyBow

$6k is way too high. I bought my non SR5 894R in equally great shape for $3500. Not one rip, extremely clean, and driven by a Hispanic grandmother for 109,000 all city miles.

6k seems a little high, but it sounds like a nice vehicle. For comparison I paid $4500 for my 88, one owner, excellent shape with 137k on the odo. Talk her down and go for it. The 1st gens are awesome vehicles.
