Napa Gold Taurus Filters: RESULTS

I saw them sticky about the oversized Taurus filter...on this thread I was hoping to get people that have the the swap to post their results. Better gas mileage, smoother running, etc. What were your results?

I noticed I feel better about my oil now.

Here's a pic of mine:

I have heard that the benifits are as follows for using a oversized oil filter:
1) Larger oil capicity
2) slightly Better cooling due to larger "filter can" surface area (kind of like a larger "heat sink")
3) much more filter media to filter more debris, contaminants (and filter will last longer).
4) More filter media = less restriction AND a Larger capacity to hold debris so the filter is less likely to be clogged (and bypassed) on extended drain intervals.

ALSO, After stoping by my local autozone and doing so comparisons with the "M1 102" (OEM Size for my 99" 3.4L V6).
What I found was this the MI 209 is the same price (10.99), the same diameter, the same threaded inlet, but the M1209 appears to be about 2" longer.

I called the mobil 1 filter hotline (i got a tech from Champion Filter company) and asked about using an oversized Mobil 1 filter for the 4-Runner and I mentioned the M1 209, and the hotline tech stated that this can be considered a upgrade to the "M1 102" Size.

So I started "running" a oversized M1-209 and I have noticed Slightly reduced engine noise and this maybe from the oversized filter lessing some filter restriction in the engine. Also your oil will last longer becuaue you 'll have a 1/2 quart more due to the oversized filter. At "start up" my engine sounds like it labours less maybe the synthetic oil is moving quicker through out the engine.

I'm a big beliver in good "oil flow" and it for this reason why I am going to run M1 0W30 SYN OIL in my engine as it is slightly thinner and will flow better... Now with 0W30 vs. 5 w 30 the only difference to me is slightly quicker oil flow at "start up"..... as the oil warms up BOTH OIL WEIGHTS will be equal to a "30 weight". So truelythe only major differance is the quicker oil flow at "startup"
Why is this so important to me, I hate to sound like a broken record yet "90% of all engine wear occurs at startup"

Is the m1-209 a PITA to get on? The area around the oil filter is already tight for space. I'd like to try this out my next oil change

That was my main concern as well. I have had several times where I cannot get my oil filter off. Its usually just my fault for putting it on too tight, and I have yet to find a oil filter wrench to fit.

I think I'll try this filter next time.

So, you just go to Napa and ask for a Taurus filter? What engine is it for? Any part # from Napa... there's one right down the street from me.

Ya...it usually takes me about 10 minutes to get my filter off. I can't ever get a filter wrench in there. I started putting powder on my glove to get a good grip and crank on it from the engine bay. I think you can get it from the wheel well too.

I got this Facom oil filter wrench from Griot's years ago. I'm not seeing it listed, as there has been a sale of the U.S. subsidiary in the last year, but it appears that they should be more available, soon.

This wrench works great in the stock location, or anywhere else, for that matter!

I hope this helps!

A set of oil filter pliers like these and that filter should come off in less than 10 seconds.

Don't get me wrong, it is a tight fit, but it aint that bad . I just stick my hand right through the fender to remove and replace the filter.

Yep. The part number for the Napa Gold Taurus filter is (Napa Number) 1516. Picked it up today with 6 quarts of Valvoline. I'll post my results.

1516 is a great filter......tight fit....but cant beat the price (less than $7 at my local Napa.) It feels quite heavy in the hand compared to a cheapie.

Napa filters are made by Wix they are a great company and have been around for a long time. Add a 5 to the NAPA number to get the Wix number (51516 is a Napa 1516)

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question - So you can use a Ford 3.0 L oil filter for the Toy 3.4 and it threads just fine? I understand the larger capacity benefits, I just was curious about the threads.
Any 3L Ford filter will do?
