My drive shaft went bye bye, how much will this cost me?

Have been having vibration problems for a while now, bought new tires, still no luck, yesterday the vibration got much worse, now it shakes when i take hit the gas around 20 miles per hour. I looked under my car today to see this

1997 4runner, SR5,2wd. no lift, 265/75/16 on back and 265/75/16 on front

UPDATE! Went to Autozone and bought some Duralast u-joints then took them to a Driveshaft shop, they replaced both front yokes and replaced the u-joints all for a whopping $68! Truck runs like new, no more vibration or noises.

x2 more info. What are you driving? Any lift? etc...

It'd be a good idea to keep pertinent information about your rig in your signature line.

My bad. No lift, 265/75/16 on the back and 265/70/16, everything else is stock.

A u-joint is like what $20?

I can't tell if it did damage to the actual driveshaft or not.

My mom's 1999 v6 2wd automatic 4runner, didn't have zerk fittings for the u-joints. So there wasn't an option to grease them

Yes you can just replace the ujoints. Your going to have to remove the whole driveshaft and pound the rest of that one out and replace it. If you have the extra cash you might think about doing the other one too. When you get new u-joints make sure they are greaseable.

Edit: I was just looking at the photo again and it looks as if it may have messed up the driveshaft a little.

To save youself alot of trouble, Take the drive shaft off and take it to a Driveline shop to have them replace the u joints and balance it...hell you might make away with a new paint job on the beast. PS. Your drivers side door jamb sticker will say what size tires came from the factory.

I see absolutely no grease. It should have slinged over the adjacent surfaces and stayed there. Doesn't look like it's been ever greased?

Here's another pic from a better view, it took a little chunk of the driveshaft, i'm going to order two u-joints and replace them both at he same time, and grease them properly, any tips on installing u-joints?

That was unfortunate. In that case, you can drill, tap and insert a zerk. I might have been cheaper than dealing with this problem.

I am religious about greasing the zerks underneath my 99 4runner.

By the way, a driveline shop is the way to go. No guessing, muss or fuss.

What's a reasonable price on replacing two u-joints and balancing?
