I use mine for caravaning to Baja. Cell phone service is non existent through the desert as well. Set up correctly, you can get 10+ miles on a good day with a CB.

If you read the firestik website, they reccomend you putting the antenna on the top of the truck, using the metal roof as sort of a satellite dish for collecting the radio waves. In the back, you will get more signal from behind you, but, not as much as in front, so its important to go as high as a stick as possible.

I think I will be buying a NGP (Non ground point) antenna and sticking it to the top of my roof rack to see what better coverage I get.

Also, you should buy an SWR meter to adjust the frequency of the firestik.

 

Everyone seems to use 17 in Washington. I don't know why. I would also suggest to anyone, take your radio in and have it peaked and tuned. I had an issue with my old radio, took it in and the guy tuned it up and it was awesome! I bought this new Cobra and it doesn't work nearly as well. I just pulled it out last night to take it in and have it done. I dont know what they did but It was a night and day difference in power, reception, clairity, everything. My old radio was a POS and I would rather have it more than my new one. Someone got a good deal on that in a garage sale!

I'd throw a Wilson 1000 or 5000 on the roof... but I like having the Wilson Flex on the back like that.

I've heard the Everhard(sp?) flex antennas are better than the Wilson Flex.. I might look into those as well.

 

out in my area channel 10 is the popular one, i was going to mount mine like this and with a cobra night watch what should my range be around?
