Keep in mind I re-geared in 2002. So all my data is from 2002.

The PG with the tiny pinion nut was in 2004. That may also be an FJ thing.

Who know I don't know. I have a POS 4Runner anyway.

No one has ever disputed the qulaity of Richmond Gears. They are by far the most expensive and may not even make a front Tacoma/4Runner 7.5" gear.

For 4.56 you can get gears from the dealer.

When the next set comes in , should be Tuesday, I'll post what they are like. If they are crap again, I'll be getting another brand.

Richmond does make a 7.5 IFS but it's for the 86-95. The 96-02 4Runner runs a reverse cut, for the high pinion, 7.5" gear. It's not reverse rotation, it's reverse cut.

Yes, I agree, see what comes in, if it sucks, try Precision. Maybe you'll get a full size pinion nut.

PG is just another re-boxer by the way.

FWIW, I bought new Yukons for the Dana 44 and they were really nice, 4 Wheelers Supply (Not 4Wheel Parts) said they set up great.

Also the PG's in the FJ did set up very well, I just thought it was weird that they would make the threads on the pinion smaller?

If Richmond made a Tacoma/4Runner/Tundra gear that would be sweet, but they don't.

yeah, i saw that toyota made 4.56's for 3rd gens. crazy huh???

anyway, the prices I got were for complete diff/third and NOT just the gear. any way to get just the OEM 4.56 gears?

i have a line on some 4.56's out of a 98 taco (US GEAR) for a very good price, front gears and complete rear diff. i also have a line on a very cheap front diff. i've also already bought another RD23 for the swap and am currently seeking a RD90. i haven't heard back from ARB yet, but that's probally where i'll get it from....

looks like i'm on my way...

I had 4.56's from the factory. I sold them to Macgyver back in 2002. Marlins dude set them up wrong and he gernaded the rear R&P.

Kinda makes me sad.

That dude is no longer with Marlin. When I was there several big dramas unrolled. Longfield was only going to sell through dealers and one of the 2 Dana60/Toyota hybrids Marlins canned guy built took a major dump.

A week at Marlin Crawler is an experience you will not forget.

My 79-85 8" Yukon Toyota 5.29 gears are marked L4 T8-529 304
I am not sure really what they are I checked both the superior axle pdf last page for toyota
http://www.superioraxle.com/pdffolde...atalog2004.pdf

and the motive pdf page 5
http://www.motivegear.com/downloads/DiffCat_2001.pdf

Not really sure both have similar stamps on thier gears as these.

I tried a few years back but could not crack the nut on that one. I could only get the complete diff with 4.56s not just the ring and pinion through the dealer. They couldn't track down a part number either. I'm happy with my 4.88s.

L4 = 4 cyl diff

T8 = Toyota 8"

529 = 5.29 ratio

304 = I have no clue.

Vernon hired Randy Ellis's buddy Brent to teach him to set up gears. He works at 4wheel parts, purely because they pay him the most. He said that Genuine Gear like Pro Comp is owned by 4WP. He also said that it is pretty hard to get a good pattern on Genuine Gears. So if GG is owned by 4WP I seriously doubt that Randy is buying from them.

He said that actual Dana-Spicer gears set up really easy, PG, Yukon and Richmond. But that he can pretty much get anything to setup. 20+ years at doing it.

The gears look more like motive gears. The way they are stamped it's broken down on page 5 of thier pdf.

They look like good quality gears not us gears but not bad gears either.
Anways they are getting put my diff's this week. As well as the aussie locker in the front and the lockright in the back.

Damn...my gears will be delivered today according to Brown and was hoping to have them in for the Badlands this weekend.

Now I'm nervous. I'll take some pics and post them. Got my fingers crossed.

Dang, I'm gonna take pics before these things go in. I could sware the ones I had that were bad had the same writing on the side as the ones in the pic on that thread. This gearing crap is making me very nervous b/c I only drive the 4Runner on basically long trips while pulling a camper (and the new one will be much heavier), go offroading, and then drive home. Now I'm gonna worry about it all the time and whether it's reliable or not-damnit that's why I got out of car racing!

I bet they came from the same source. Try Precision Gear if they are still bad. My pinion nut thing may just be with FJ's 9" and not the 8".

All these places seem to be re-boxing the same gear.

What do you know about Sierra gears-they are going in the front? CJ at Marlin talked me into them b/c the Yukons are back ordered forever.

All I know about Sierra is in the FJ realm,

www.cruiseroutfitters.com

Sells the Sierra Gear and they seem to have had really good luck with them in FJ's.

I paid more for the Precision Gears than they wanted for the Sierra's. Not sure if it was really worth it.

Check out there site.
