I went to stay with my parents this weekend since I finally had a break in my summer so I figured i'd get rid of those ugly chrome emblems and go with black. Hobby Lobby did not have the black pearl paint i wanted so I decided to go with Flat Black for the "murdered" out look since I am trying to add as much black on my truck as possible anyway. Here are just some sample pics as night time creeped up on me and putting 3M emblem tape back on the emblems is going to take much longer then i expected, I was only able to get the back Toyota symbol and the passenger side Limited logo on. I figured I would throw in some pictures of my new hella 500s I added to my brush guard as well. Expect the rest of the pictures to be up tomorrow morning/afternoon.

i've been contemplating the flat black (or semi-gloss, perhaps) as opposed to the black pearl "everyone else" does. only difference is it'll be on white...

i like it! i might do this to the yota symbol on my hatch since i just took the others off. if that looks good, i'm doing it to the SR5 badges on the sides too. nice idea

 

That paint is going to peel from a garden hose. You need to sand blast the chrome off to get any longevity.

 

according to that write up the guy had his for 4 months with no signs of fade. i also did test it out with the hose and it seemed to have no problems holding up.

the emblems are plastic, a little sanding and some primer will help the paint to stick better, i don't think the plastic would stand up to sandblasting. i've also used a product called Bulldog that softens the plastic a little before paint and when the paint coat goes on, it bonds to the plastic instead of sticking on top of it. that and maybe use some of that Fusion paint specially made for plastic and i think they should last for some time. just my opinion though.

 

Chemical bond is the best, that's what Bulldog attempts to promote. The chrome on the emblems is not plastic, so nothing will bond to it chemically. Either you take off the chrome, or sand it aggressively to get a semi decent mechanical bond. A Brillo pad isn't going to create a surface for the paint to grab onto, plus you can't sand in all the crevices. That's where the peeling will start.

What you guys are doing isn't anything new. It's been done the same way 20 years ago, and I've seen the results
It will last 4 months, but give it a few seasons, and it's done.
