motor swap on my DD 84 pickup

I'm looking into a motor swap on my DD 84 pickup.

Have any of you 5vzfe owners ever towed 5k lbs? I would like to be able to tow my trail rig on a flat bed trailer (trail rig is also an 84 yota) I dont care if it's a little slow but i'd like to be able to go 60 on flat freeway

If not the 3.4, what motor do you think i could get in there that would pull that much weight and not suck gas like crazy (70 mile round trip to college each day)

Al-

If you are looking to tow, don't waste the money on a Toyota build. Buy a full size chevy or ford that has the Engine, Braking, and transmission capacity to tow a trail rig. I towed 2k lb race cars with my 86 4Runner and getting up and going wasn't the scary part. Stopping and control was. Even with trailer brakes, its not a good idea.

Get a Tundra. My 08 Crewmax with LSD, 4.30 gearing and HD tow package pulls my trailer and trail rig with ease.

I just figured if he was rich enough to afford a 3.4L swap, and a wheelin rig, so a Tundra is next on the list!

Don't hate!

As for your original question, I would check in an owners manual. Or maybe just call toyota to see what they are rated at? I think the 4Runners are rated higher than the Tacomas.

I've towed trailers a couple times, once through the mountains w/ decent weight to it (not 5000lbs though), and the engine has more than impressed me. I have more problems w/ stopping, and handling, than anything else. I wouldn't mind a bit more power in the mountains though.

Ok. I'm planning on running the v-6 3rd's and some tougher inner axles and birfs. I'd like to go with the vented lc rotor, 3.4 4runner calipers and master cylinder and trailer brakes. I just need to have something i can tow with and still drive to school

Edit: Oh and i'm gonna add the chev 63's and do a spring under axle conversion so i can handle the weight and wont get lift

For the cost of all that, you could have a very capable tow rig that could double as a DD, and get roughly the same MPG's

Yeah i know but i love my truck and i'd love to see it towing the trail rig but i realize this isn't really practical.

I think i'll see if my dad wants to split insurance on a tow rig/work truck that we can use to haul jobsite goods and tow the trail rig weekends. I found a nice diesel 85 f250 with a service body for $900 with a bad head gasket he says it still runs.

Thanks for the help and feedback

good deal...it would take a ton of $$$$ to make the '84 a tow rig.
