I don't use it, but I think most here do because it is more readily available than some other synthetics. You can find it in almost any parts store or Wal-Mart I do believe. Products like Amsoil and Redline must usually be ordered and a lot of people don't like the hassle of having to do that.

I've been running Mobil 1 in my vehicles for years. Part of the reason is that we used almost exclusively sythetic oils and greases on the heavy equipment in my old job. I could seed the results of our oil sampling, and the real world results, when we opened up an engine or gearbox. I was always impressed at how good things looked (most of the time we were replacing worn seals, not mechanical components).
I got my own look-see on my BMW a few years ago, when I had to replace a leaking oil pan gasket at 155K. I got the pan off, and other than a little varnishing off to the sides (no idea what the P.O. used), the mechanicals looked like they were brand new.
Mobil also did a test of their own a few years ago, that included lab running and real world running of a BMW 3 series. They put over 1,000,000 miles on it, with regular servicing at 7,500m intervals. When they passed the 1M mark, they tore down the engine, and every single part still measured well within factory specs. They put it back together, and, as far as I know, are still running it.

Mobile 1 Synthetic is a fine oil. However, unless you are running extended oil change intervals it may be hard to justify the cost of it. I am running it right now in my Taco because I got it extremely cheap. My last oil change was at 7500 miles, and I'm sending it in for a UOA. I'm confident it'll report as just fine.

same here thats what they told me they used in the factory so thats what i filled up with....it cost me about $24 dollars to change the oil with the 5000 whereas it would have cost me nearly $60 with the synthetic.....

How is it costing that much for Synthetic, Wal-Mart sells 5 quart jugs of Mobil-1 for about $24 and a Napa gold filter is about $6.50, I've never spent $60 on an oil change.

I agree with UNR.grad, $60 bucks is steep for an oil change especially if you're doing it yourself...Wal Mart does have 5qt jugs for like $20 bucks. I read up on Mobil 1's test too and besides longer change intervals it's one of the main reasons I use only fully synthetic and my Runner is still going with 175k.

If the oil is dirty - change it. Mine goes 5 - 7 k and comes out relatively clean. I would not feel guilty if it went 10k.
As for the original questions - i used to use Castrol Syntec adn loved it. Back then it was cheaper then Mob 1. Now it is not so I use Mob 1 b/c itis available everywhere.

so the "dirt" that accumulates in 7k miles is ok? i know the oil holds up but isnt it bad for the motor to have dirty oil cycling through it?

My oil doesnt come out pristine - but relatively clean. Especially as compared to what you described and what I have experienced with other vehicles.

You must have somthing else going on, because the oil I replace at 7,500 miles on both my truck and my BMW is only mildly discolored from use (and certainly not black!)
