many questions (possibly stupid) about 4runners.

i'm thinking of selling my 03 tacoma xtra cab 2wd for a '99 or '00 4runner.

but i won't be able to afford the 4wd that i would probably want so i was wondering.....these model years, was a 2wd with limited slip or a locker available?

how can i tell if either one of these things is installed on the trucks i'm looking at?

i want the extra interior room that the 4runner would provide me....the taco is just too small being an extended cab. i don't think i *need* 4wd....but i have gotten the taco stuck while camping. i feel that a limited slip or locker or something would have gotten me out.

thanks for the input/info....

james.

There hasn't ever been a limited slip available for 4runners. The locker's last year was 2000, and it only came as an option on 4WD models. There is a switch on the driver's side of the dash that says RR Diff Lock if it has a locker.

ah. so i'm mostly screwed if i find a 2000 2wd at a price i can afford.

what's up with manufacturers not offering some sort of traction on 2wd trucks??

what's the best aftermarket solution to getting some traction to the rear end?

James,

You might want to check on swapping out the rear member on the 2WD with one with a locker from a bone yard. You'll also have to install the factory ECU, wiring harness and dash switch, but you'll have what you're looking for with Toyota parts. You can also look at aftermarket companies such as ARB or Detroit locker, they may have a solution for you.
