I thought I had read that article a million times, but I guess I missed something. But the front drive shaft is not spinning in 2wd, so I guess that's the part the synchros in the transfer case are supposed to help get up to speed.

I havent broken any hubs on my truck... we were lookin to do it on a rockcrawler a few of us built... it keeps crackin hub housings, or breaking the dials. my truck is just fine with man hubs, i prefer it that way becuase i still drive it on the street. this other truck on the other hand, all it sees is off-road. so FJ flanges are what we need to be looking for? Thanks Steve

I don't mean to bring this thread from the dead but I have a couple questions. let me give you a little backround. My 4runner has always had the 4wd light on even in 2wd. I have put it on jack stands multiple time to make sure the front two wheels weren't engaged. I have also replaced the electrical switches and vacuum lines. So my question is, if I was to take off my ADD and swap it to manual locking hubs would I not have to worry anymore about the 4wd light being on? Cause even though I know its not in 4wd I would like to have the extra comfort of locking and unlocking the hubs myself and not relying on the ADD system.

With the ADD system, the the 4WD light is lit by a sensor on the front differential that makes ground when the ADD shift collar is moved into the locked position.

When the ADD shift collar is slid to its disengaged position, the light should go out.

Just installing manual hubs will not make the 4WD light go out.

Yoy've got some mechanical/electrical troubleshooting to do.

Sorry ive never had to work on the 4wd system. How would I go about trouble shooting the 4wd system in the front axle?

I already gave ya the first clue. Find the sensor wire connector near the ADD mechanism on the front axle and disconnect it. The 4WD light should go out.

The 4WD light wiring has nothing to do with putting the ADD in, or out, it is only a position sensor.

If it does not go out, the wire is shorted somewhere between there and the dash cluster.

I also explained how that sensor; (more properly, a switch), makes and breaks ground when the ADD shift collar moves in and out of lock.

The sensor switch that tells the electric/vacuum valves to send vacuum down to the ADD actuator is on the transfer case.

You may have to open up the ADD actuator mounting to examine the shift collar position and verify that the ADD actuator really moves when vacuum is applied and let go.

Your problem might be as simple as a misrouted vacuum hose IDK

You need a Factory Service Manual and some know-how with a VOM instrument.

If you understand how things work, it makes it a lot easier to figure out why they don't.
