3rd hand runner with some cut wiring Q

Recently bought my first 20-year-old Toy and it still feels like a good decision!

Previous owner did some minor dumb things to it, in this case cutting the wires from the tranny reverse switch. The truck is also cat-less. It has a rear 02 in place but the front is gone (there was a front, right?). So I have a few random pairs of wires down there. Shorting them does not turn on the lights, so who knows what they even are.

So, before I run new wire from the switch to the lights does anyone have a suggestion? 98 SR5 4Runner

Thanks

I'm replacing the switch. Like I said I am testing by shorting the wires. I'm assuming the switch is a contact closure, am I wrong?

Identify what wire colours are removed and at what junction, and then Remove the wires and connectors from a donor 4R from same year and trim level, along with the missing 02 sensor, 02 flange and cat, buy some shink tubing and solder. Most switches are grounded to close connection.

Maybe I'm not being clear. I don't need a switch, a cat, a donor truck, or a connector. I'm trying to identify the cut switch wires.

If anyone knows what color the wires going to reverse switch are, or where they originate/terminate that information would save me some hassle.

In that case I would identify what colour the wire was buy removing the driver side rear trunk panel, I would also unplug the tail light harness and add 12V to that wire to insure reverse bulbs work, then Identify wire colour(s) and find it at the reverse transmission position sensor. if that doesn't work I would then run a wire from that plug(coming from transmission to tail lights) and try to complete that circuit at the transmission shifter position sensor to identify problem location. Again most wires/switches work by grounding them completing the circuit.

Your truck will be used as a farm truck or for off road purposes only I hope, because your performance and gas bill will surfer greatly without a front and rear 02 operating and no Cat.
