MAF question

in attempting to clean my MAF sensor over the weekend, i pulled up the link on 4x4 wire:

ok, am i a total retard or am i missing something? my MAF sensor doesn't look like the pictures shown on the link at all. Mine seems to be encompassed inside of a black box that i think said Denso on it. i unplugged the sensor, but there weren't 2 screws to detach the MAF. did i miss something or is there another type of MAF that i may have? it's a 97 SR5 4x4and any suggestions would be great.

no, but i will surely take some tonight and post them back. of the other maf's i have seen (on ebay, or wherever) they look different from mine. like mine is all contained in a box or something...

My rig is a 97' sr5..but it's kinda hard to tell without pics of what you're meaning. I took mine out nad cleaned it with the same stuff in the write up when I was tidying up the engine bay. I would say mine looked the same but I could see the two sensor wires in mine, so I just cleand down the cylinder or center of the MAF and left it at that. I do know that it needs to remain installed or a check engine light will fire. Good luck

There was a different style MAF on the earlier trucks, I seem to remember a change around 97, but don't quote me on that.

it's the 3.4. well i know the previous owner never cleaned it and it has high miles, so i thought it may be a good idea. my CEL is also on but i'm sure its due to the front oxygen sensor.

Looks like you have the older style MAF sensor. It is completley enclosed in and integrated with the tube. You need to take off the clamp holding the intake tube to the MAF (the metal clamp with a screw in it between the MAF and throttle body)and then disconnect the MAF tube from the air box.

i thought about trying to disconnect that center piece (the one that contains the MAF) but i loosened that clamp and it still seemed reluctant to detach, so i didn't force anything. i then tried to pull out the part that connects to the air filter, but it felt like i was forcing it so i just thought i'd run it by you guys on yotatech to see if you had dealt with this type before. i'll get in there again and get it loose. thanks greedy

any chance that spraying that electrical connection cleaner through the air filter box and forcing it into my goofy MAF casing would clean it? i'm thinking the motor would need to be running so it would pull that stuff through there but i'm not sure if it would damage anything by doing it that way?? just a thought.

I wouldn't get it wet while it is running and the MAF of your style is very expensive so be careful.

You do that and you'll ruin it for sure......
