MAF compatibility

I am just trying to complete my 3.4swap - motor is from a '99 Tacoma- my problem is the MAF is pooched. THe unit I have is an all-in-one piece that is a dealer item and lists for $1000+...... it looks like other year 3.4's had MAF with replaceable sensors. Does anyone know the cross compatibility of different year MAF's? If I could switch it to the replaceble kind - the sensors are only $150-200.

I have a 99 tacoma 3.4 and my MAF is replaceable. Just get one from Advanced Auto....it's the same part.

Ya I have tried to clean it.... from what I understand my motor came from an early production '99 and the sensor is not replaceable in my MAF. Could anyone post up a pic of the plug that goes into your MAF that has the replaceable sensor? If they are compatible I may be able to pick up the housing from the wrecker and get a new sensor if needed from the local auto parts supplier for less than the $1000 the dealer wants for my part.

You can do a MAF swap to the newer style. You need the newer style airbox too, though. You don't actually replace the sensor, the entire MAF is a different style, much smaller and cheaper. The plug is the same, but you must repin 4 out of the 5 wires. I did it using this as a guide:

Thank you!! Exactly what I thought... that is excellent info for anyone who is faced with replacing the earlier MAF units.
