I went and checked out the new Tacoma's the other day. I really liked them but when I popped the hood I saw that the oil filter was mounted upside down. Now this makes it extremely easy/convenient for maintenance I'm concerned because everytime you shut off the motor the oil will drain out of the filter. This I'm assuming will cause the motor to be starved with oil for a second or two at start up becasue the oil pump will have to refill the filter at each start up before the motor gets oil. Now I know this doesn't seem like a big deal but this will eventually lead to premature engine wear/failure as most wear is caused at start up. What do you guys think?

 

That's why you use a filter that has a good anti-drainback valve. Then the oil doesn't drain out of the filter after engine shut-off.

 

Exactly. The OEM filter is EXCELLENT. There should be no concerns, many engines are like this.

 

Ill be changing my oil shortly, I'll let you know how good the whole thing works.

 

The oil pump picks up oil in the sump (oil pan) and pumps it through the engine before it gets to the filter. Doesn't have to fill the filter first so this is a non issue.

Bigger issue is the fargin mess you'd make every time you change the filter....

 

The oil filter in the V6 is AWESOME. No mess, super easy. It has a shaped "dish" to catch any spill, a drain plug-rubber stopper on it, just under the "dish" (put a length of tube on it and you can be as messy as you want-never spill on the engine). Never have spilled a drop of oil in the engine bay.

I always use OEM filters and don't see a reason to use anything else. The toy filters look very high quality inside.
