locker and gear question

hey guys I am going to be upgrading to 35s soon and I am going to install some new gears, I am looking into getting some 5.29s or 4.88s but I am not sure about which will be better for a DD that goes off roading on the weekends. Also I am looking in to getting a lock rite locker for the rear diff but I am not sure about how well they perform on road and off, any help would be great thanks.

I have a lockrite and it works great for what I do. I have 5.29s and 31s right now. Going to 33s or 35s. For a dd you might benifit from 4.88 for better cruising and a little lower rpms.

I wouldn't know for sure, but 35s with 4.88 would mean that speeds could be achieved at lower rpms than with 5.29s and could mean a mileage increase as long as the engine does not have to work extra hard to pull the higher gearing. On the flip side too much rpms to achieve a speed will hurt mileage also. For mileage i would think under gearing would be best i.e. going 4.88 and 35s. Not having the right gear and tire combo though will throw off the odometer though. For stock mpg you better go with 4.88 and 33s or 5.29s and 35s. Youll probably be happier that way for overall.

you'll want 4.88 if it is a driver.

second that--with 5.29's my motor would be reving pretty high on the highways.

35's and 4.88's are still a lower gearing than 265/75/16's and 4.10's.

Mileage will hurt--no ifs and or buts--be looking to get in the 16-17 mpg range.

i would say 35's, 4.88's and double the cases

That way you have decent highway speed and you can crawl when on the trail.

My 2001 (automatic) has 315/75s, 4.88s and dual ARBs and it has a stock feel to me on the road (power-wise) and I have no issues on the rocks. Much better road feel than the 285/75s I ran with the 4.88s for a couple of years.

Spend the money and get ARB lockers. A "lunchbox locker" will clatter and engage when you make turns if you are accelerating.

so what you guys are saying is with 4.88's I will be looking at 16-17 mpg on the highway with a stock power feel and with 5.29's I will be reving higher on the highway but it will be better off road that the 4.88's

Not really. The 4.88's are still a lower gearing than 4.10's with stock wheels (granted 265/75/16's). The set up will work well for you off road--but yes mileage will hurt. It is just the name of the game because you are adding so much rotational mass to the drivetrain.

Look for a speed calculator---gearing calculator etc... and run your numbers. THen you will see what i am talking about.
