light mounting on factory rack

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone had mounted any lights on the factory rack. I was thinking about doing it and done some searching along with looking through the community section but didn't see any. I have seen alot of you guys mount them on the factory bumpers but none on the rack. I think I need some more lights for the night runs but I just can't buy a Yakima right now since I still need bumpers and skids first. If any of you guys have done this or seen it done please let me know what you thought about it. I think the performance of the light would be the same but I really don't want it to look bad. Thanks in advance. Pics would be great.

A lot of guys run Surco racks on their rigs, however I have heard a lot of people that discourage mounting lights top side. One issue is the reflection caused by the light can be annoying, and another issue is that your lights become tree magnets," I guess it depends where your wheeling" You'll most likely screw up your roof rack if you mount them there. I would recommend that if your going to mount'em up there do it right and get a different rack. Check the classified section, local paper, craigslist, you can find them cheap. Just my .02!

Yeah, I wouldn't mount them to my factory rack either. However, they look good on a basket style roof rack.

On a '95 4R I used to own, I had a Conferr rack basket mounted on top w/ 4 square KC 100wt driving lights mounted on the front and 2 square KC 55wt fog lights mounted on the rear of the basket. The mounting brackets were low and even w/ the basket, so it looked really good. The light output was awesome and never had a problem w/ trees.

IMO, Surco racks just don't sit close enough to the roof for my liking. That was one thing about the Con-ferr that I liked...the gap was only 2". Too bad they are out of business now. Defender racks still carry a few of them, but their own version looks good. It comes w/ 4 mounting points in the front and 2 in the rear for lights. I've only heard a few people running Defender racks and they both had mixed reviews. They probably weigh more than the Surco do too.

You can buy some light bars to mount on top. I've not seen any on 4Runners but there is a guy in my town driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee and has a light bar with a few lights. The last place I've seen them are on Truckperformance.com I almost bought one for my old Blazer but wound up selling it for the 'runner.
