im raising the back of my moms 95 4runner by swaping in new springs. is there any special tools i need to do this? ie coil compressor. thanks

 

ive heard that to put in new coils, you dont need a coil compressor.when i put spacers on my rig on top of my coils, i used a set of external coil spacers.

 

With stockers, you should be able to pop them out sans compressor.

Support the frame on stands, take off the wheels, disconnect the shocks and have at it.

 

Also disconnect the sway bar and watch the hoses (brakelines etc) that attach to the axle, you might want to loosen some of these up. You don't want to rip these out. There are a couple writeups in the tech section on how to swap out the coils.

 

When I put some new Downey coils on my 95 4runner, the stock springs came off no problem. Disconnect the shock absorber (at least on the bottom) and dissconnect the swabary in both wheel wells (2 bolts per side). Then jack up the vehicle, support it on the frame. After that, I CAREFULLY pushed down the axle housing with my foot and the stock spring came out no problem.

For putting in the new spring, I used a $9 spring compressor from Harbor Freight. Not sure if I needed it or not. I bought it for the job so I used it. However, the Downey coils were the same height as stock springs (more or less) just with 1 extra coil for more support. So, I probably could have gotten the Downey's in w/o the compressor.
