Well seems that my 2000 4Runner rear end is leaking where the drive shaft goes in. Anyone know if this is just a simple seal here or am I opening a can of worms? Any suggestions on a shop manual for this truck also?

 

Its just a simple seal replacement. I have a 97 4runner and had to replace it twice. once at 78,000 miles and 90,000 miles on the driver side.

Are you sure you are not referring to the axle seal? He said his is leaking from the driveshaft seal in the rear end.

After you remove the rear section of the drive shaft all you should have to do is remove the nut that holds the yoke/flang on. It should be locked by way of punched into a "key way" slot. Use a small punch/chisel to unlock the nut then remove it. The yoke/flang should slide off with a few taps of a hammer. Now you should be looking at the seal. Pop it out with a large screwdriver and reinstall. Don't forget to relock that nut.

Sounds like a Pinion seal to me. IIRC, it's not an easy seal to replace.

 

The problem with replacing the seal is the pinion nut. That nut has to be torqued back to the same specs as before. Overtightening will change the crush sleeve and preload on the pinion gear.

I'd suggest you take it to a rear end shop and have then do it right. Shouldn't cost too much, mine was $40.

I'm butting gears in my 91 and the stock "crush sleeve" is a hard Sleeve. Much heavier than the crush sleeve in the master install kit.
