The guy at my local shop down the road says that I need to get new shocks for my 1999 4Runner that has 115k miles on it. The stearlership, on the other hand, says that they don't typically recommend new shocks/struts until about 150k or more due to to the fact that the factory shocks are "bomb proof" in their minds.

What do you guys think about that. And, what do you know about KYB shocks, which is what the guy down the street is recommending. We would put the KYB Gas-adjust shocks on there which are a little less stiff than the KYB monomax.

Originally I was thinking that I wanted to do OME, but I don't really want to adjust ride height and put 285 tires on there, so I am considering some other shock options. My springs are still in good shape with good ride height and no sagging. Help please!

 

I think stock shocks really start to show wear before 90k and I'm at 104k right now and I definetly need new ones.
I'm still considering the OME setup but I'm also considering the Bilstien/PP spring setup which while only netting about a 1.5" lift it gives a more firmer ride (stiff to some but it is a truck) and the springs are progressive rate which help with body roll. I however wouldn't recommend the Bils with the stock springs since the shocks are too stiff for the stock springs.

 

I have no experience with KYB, I only heard they are stiff (probably the monomax).
I replaced mine at 80k due to the strut bushing wearing out on the stock suspension. I found a good deal on Bilsteins but the ride is firmer than stock. If you like the stock feel why not just replace with stock struts/shocks (30$ each or so). You can do the rear job easily yourself, the front is a much bigger pain.

 

Gettin' 'em installed today, so I will have to let you all know what I think in a week or so once they get broken in.

 

I've got them, they're pretty stiff compared to rough countrys and the stockers and some ghetto gabriel or somethin like that shock but they give a good ride and keep everything under control...take it easy over speed bumps though as you'll jump em if you're goin like 25-30 (we have speedbumps on roads here that have 25 mph speed limits)
