Installing aftermarket stereo unit

i have a 6 speaker factory single cd player w/ am fm radio w/ power antenna. does anyone know , when installing a aftermaket h/u ,do you remove the factory amp sitting behind the head unit?
And what is the second smaller coxial looking plug in the back for ? I heard it might be for the power antenna, if so, how is it hook up to a aftermarket unit? I'm going to be using a slightly older pioneer cd player .
Thank you

if you aftermarket HU has an internal amp, then you need to take out the factory amp, and dont worry about the second connector

Remove the Amp - You will need either a Harness adapter to attach to what exits the existing Amp (available multiple places like Cutchfield) to your new stereo or to cut that connector off and wire to that. I installed new speakers and tweeters in the front and it does sound better than it did with the stock speaker after the HU install. I did not install an Amp a new Amp - I like my hearing.

That second wire is an additional antennae wire - ignore it.

Oh Boy - They are Alpine (model #?????) - I bought them a few years ago (expensive at that time) and never installed in my van. They sort-of fit in my 4R - with a little modifcation they are just GREAT. I am never afraid to make a few nips and tucks.

There are many posts on HUs and speakers in these forums. I see that most people add Amps and Subs. My one recommendation if you replace the speakers and tweeters - - - Replace the Cross-over and run new wires into the door. i did not initially and ended up doing it later due to issues with the wires.
