Well if you take it off road having it under the truck hampers the departure angle. It is also easier to get to when its on the back. Personally, I think it looks better. The only thing about that design is that if your up against a tree it could rip it off. I wonder how much it would cost to get one of those shipped over? It would solve the "weak frame" problem of having the tirecarier on the bumper.

There are two more cool feature I like about the JDM surf. The JDM 4runner has a electric power retracteble mirror on the rear spoiler so you can see what ever around the rear bumper with no problem. They also equipt with the digital inclinometer at the overhead holder!!

That mirror's not as great as you may at first think. Its only fitted to the top of the range SSR-G model, the spare wheel carrier on the back is also only fitted as standard to this model, others should have it below, altough in practice many japanese Surfs (4runners) have had the wheel carrier fitted as an option when new, regardless of model.
Back to the mirror, the problem is the wheel on the back, the mirror does not extend beyond it and therefore cannot offer you a clear view. It shows a good portion of the bumper ok, but as the wheel protrudes beyond this, you could easily hit something with the wheel before it comes into view via the mirror. I've got it fitted on mine but rarely use it. You're not missing much. (unless of course you fit the spolier/mirror combo without the wheel carrier)
