I'm shocked at the difference...

No pun intended

Thanks to Mr. BajaTaco, I've had the opportunity to rebuild his old Sway-A-Way 2.0" RaceRunner coilovers. All new seals, poly bushings, top plates, cans, adjustment collars, and rod end bearings combined with the remaining parts to make virtually brand new shocks. Following Chris’s instructions made the process painless. I set the dividing piston to 8.875” to the shoulder of the piston, not to the bottom of the cup. The flat side of the piston faces towards the Schrader valve. Getting the cans off the lower mount required a 30” cheater bar on my 24” pipe wrench! The new cans were installed with a new o-ring and blue locktite. After setting for 24 hours to allow the locktite to dry, the shocks were filled with Torco oil and sealed up. Getting the wiper seal on the shaft was made a bit easier by applying a little grease to the wiper. Our local KTM dealer has the proper equipment to charge the shocks with nitrogen and they were set to 184 PSI for $20.00. The shock install went smoothly – thanks again to Chris’s detailed instructions.

I had recently upgraded the '98 Taco from stock Bilstien struts to KYB MonoMax struts. They were a vast improvement over the well worn stock struts, and are covered here:

But they are not even in the same class as the RaceRunners. I completed the initial install last night and headed for the closest patch of washboard road I could find. All I can say is, AWESOME. Absolutely AWESOME. Even the paved journey to work this morning was smooth.

The current setting of 1.25" of thread exposed below the collar netted 2” of lift with less than 10 degrees of CV angle. I may drop that down to about 1-1/2 of lift – the front is a bit nose high.

Again, Thanks Chris!

Mark

Although Sway-A-Way does not usually sell their products directly, (you have to purchase through one of their dealers) I haven't heard of them refusing to talk to anyone who has questions about their product. Just give them a call at 818-700-9712 and they can refer you to the best place to ship them to have them rebuilt.
