Ignition timing adjustment

I wanted to check the ignition timing on my Surf. The Haynes manual tells me to short TE1 and E1 on the diagnose connector. This should stop the EFI computer from advancing the ignition but I see no difference; it's still advancing. Are these the correct terminals, or am I missing something here?

How do you know it is stil advancing?? What is the timing set at when you re-check it once you unplug the jumper?

TE1 & E1 are the corect jumper wires, Idle speed needs to be 750 and you set it to 5 degrees BTDC, (Torque spec. for the bolt is 14ft-lb by the way) Remove the wire and see if the advance goes to 10-14 BTDC..

JFYI.. I have mine at 8 or 9 degrees BTDC.. If I go to 10 I get some ping..

Are you saying when you recheck it, it is staying at 4 degrees??

Firefyter-Emt,

Are you sure that is right? I thought the timing was supposed to be 10 degrees advanced with the TE1 and E1 jumped at 800 rpms.

With the connectors jumped my timing ranges from 10 degrees to 14 degrees. I have a slight miss so my rpms aren't too steady. I do get some pinging though. I didn't know that it was supposed to be set at 5 degrees with the connector jumped.

Let me get this straight, after I remove the wire from the TE1 and E1 connectors my timing will advance even more. Is this right? If so than that means that I have another problem from that headgasket job because my distributer is turned all the way down.

Please let me know if I got everything right.

Thanks

Well that is word for word out of a 92 Toyota FSM I have for my truck.... except it is not for the V-6.. It's too damn late at night..

Ok.. TE1 & E1 should be jumped, Set idle at 800, set to 10 BTDC (torque to 13ft-lb) and it should be at 8 BTDC at idle..

Give me a dope slap for looking up the wrong page.. :pat:

I know because the mark goes right of the planet if I rev up the engine. When I unplug the jumper it reacts the same.

TE1 & E1 are the corect jumper wires, Idle speed needs to be 750 and you set it to 5 degrees BTDC, (Torque spec. for the bolt is 14ft-lb by the way) Remove the wire and see if the advance goes to 10-14 BTDC..
According to the sticker under the hood its 700 rpm and 10 degrees BTC. It's set at 30-40 degrees BTC now, or my strobe is inventing some puls to trigger early.

JFYI.. I have mine at 8 or 9 degrees BTDC.. If I go to 10 I get some ping..

Well, there is no reason you should be reving it while adjusting the timing.. I have never looked to see if the mark jumps when you rev it with the jumper attached.. But Follow the above method and it should be correct.. Your sticker may be a little diffrent?? 50 rpm is a hard thing to see with out a real diagnostic tach..

Also.. what plug wire do you have it attached to?? # 1 is the passanger side front...

You should/could race the engin a couple of times to give it a chance to settle.

I attached it to the right plug.

But apparently the trottle position sensor was the culprit. It was so far off that the computer never got the IDLE signal and advanced the ignition, even at low revs. After adjusting the TPS I could quite easily set the ignition at 10 degrees BTDC.

I have still some problems but now I could turn the idle adjustment screw in two full turns. The engine now accellerates better but sometimes I hear a plop in the exhaust and it won't take off until I kick down all the way. I still suspect the Air Valve of not closing, but sofar I havn't been able to locate that device; maybe a Surf doesn't have one.
