Yup, more problems. When i turned on my 4Runner today it stays at 1500 RPMs at idle. After a little while of driving it will go dwon to close to 1k rpms. Another thing I noticed is that when I push the clutch in while I am driving, the engine will rev up another 300 rpms then go back to the high idle.

I just replaced all the wires and spark plugs, so maybe it is something to do with that?

 

Not sure if 5-speeds are different but warm idle should be about 750 to 800rpms.

 

So it started doing this after you replaced the plugs? I doubt it's the plugs, but you may have knocked something loose in the R&R process. Check everything over.

What type of plugs did you go with BTW?

 

ill check to see where mine idles at cold and when its warm
ok mine idles at 1300 rpms cold and 700rpms warm

 

Hey Can someone help me, my rear window is not working it's done this before but then it started working again, but now its not even budging, I took off the panel and everything seems okay but im not and electrician. So does anyone have any ideas

Toyotas idle higher when they are cold in order to warm up faster, my 99' does it as well as my 90' automatic. The clutch thing is a little odd although I have noticed that mine does something similar, but not a 300 RPM difference.

 

mine go's a little up when i change gears ? maybe i dont let off the gas all the way

 

mine is not very noticeable, i'll check it out next time i drive though

 

I think I knwo why I have been noticing it. I have another problem now, there is a REALLY loud and annoying whining sound in the engine bay right near the alternator. I am hoping it isnt the alternator as that is a 200$ fix. . . I think I just notice the engine more now since it is so loud. The whining is really only bad above 2k rpms but is still noticable when its idling.

 

well if you wheel ur truck alot the alternator is in a bad spot and it gets mud and other stuff tossed at it

 

Toyota actually swapped them out under warranty.

I uploaded a video of the sound. Wait til about 5 seconds in when I rev the engine a little. I only revved it to about 2k rpms, though it sounds much higher than that.

Have you looked at the IAC valve?
You might want to try cleaning that and the throttle body and see if that helps.

Any more history on it would be helpful too (ie what was done to it recently before this occurred).

 

Went offroading a week ago and hit some realllly deep mud, came up over the hood a little bit. I managed to kill the alternator there. I fixed the alternator and the next day I cleaned my engine bay out and somehow that fouled the plugs/ wiring. After I had that replaced everything has run smoothly until about 2 days ago. The whining sound started probably Saturday. I went offroading Saturday, but very little. The whining was there before we went offraoding. It has gotton signifigantly worse in the past day.

 

Did the idle jump start happening right after this as well?

 

Yeah it did.

 

I had a ton of lights on my old 4Runner and I burned up a diode in alternator. Then it wined, you could hear it through the stereo as well. However don't buy a new alternator if there is something wrong with it. Take it to a battery shop or a starter and alternator shop and have it repaired or rebuilt for $30-$60.

If you turn on your car cold, how long does it take for the idle to go down? When I start my car comepletely cold with AC on it idles at 1500 RPM and slowly goes down as it warms up, to around 800RPM. This is normal.

 

I've experienced a high idle on another vehicle I've got and it turned out to be vacuum related. After replacing a few rotted lines, idle was back to normal. Of course that vehicle is not a Toyota, so it could very well be unrelated to this problem.


I've also noticed my '02 4runner will idle around 1500 on cold startup, but within a few seconds will fall back to 700 or so.

 

had the same issue, the TPS sensor needs to be cleaned
