IDENTIFY THIS SOUND (56k no way)

Okay, so here's the story: We just moved into a new house, so new in fact that the yard hadn't even been graded or had sod installed. So anyway, my girlfriend and I were bored one day and she told me to take my truck back there, kidding around, but I thought it would be funny so I did it. Well there's not much to do, but towards the end of this movie, i was reversing in 4wd HI and all of a sudden after revving prolly around 2k-2500 rpm's to get up the hill (probably should've used 4lo) I heard this terrible grinding/squeaking noise that sounded like it came from the rear of the truck. You can hear it in the video, but it's at the VERY end, just turn your speakers up. You can just ignore the lame camera work and wheeling before that. So after listening, give me a diagnosis. Should I check my differential fluid? Was it gears? (BTW it's an auto tranny, '97 V6 SR5 if you couldn't tell from the vid). I dont have a locker, therefore it wasn't engaged, and they're just stock gears, with a LOT of miles on them.

Also, I encoded this vid with divX so you'll need the proper codecs to view, but I compressed it down pretty good for you guys (3.8mb). You could stream it or right click and choose save target as. Thanks for the help, these noises scare the crap out of me! (You can see the horror in my face when it happens, even behind my huge sunglasses).

even if you dont know what the sound is, I welcome any stupid comments because this wasn't exactly a serious endeavor in the first place

Semi Entertaining Wheeling Vid containing scary screeching noise at the end

I couldn't get the video to work at home but the sound made me think of the body shifting under flex.

You have me watching the first time from a distance with the volume low. When I read your description I was waiting for something to pop up and scare the crap out of me at the end.

I couldn't watch the video but I could hear it with WMP. Where you flexing your truck? It sounds like it's a bushing or a body mount. It doesn't sound all that bad. I would try it again and see if you can recreate the sound and narrow down it's source.

I'd say that it's definitely something rubbing somewhere. I wouldn't be worried about the gears or the t-case.

My vote is that it isn't a big deal. I've got a bushing that squeaks somewhere in the rear of my 4runner. I've just been too lazy for the past year and a half to try and figure out what the problem is.

Sounds like a rubber squeek to me as well. Bed mounts, spare tire, etc. All can make that sort of sound. It does not sound worrysome.

you guys need some divX codecs!! Anyway, thanks for the advice, I'm going to try to recreate it on my driveway somehow. It wasn't flexed at all, it was going straight up a hill in reverse 4wd.

Any more input is welcomed. i wish you could see the video though, it's kind of amusing because it's so ridiculous!

WEIRD! I have the SAME EXACT noise. It only happens in reverse while under load (ie uphill). I have no idea what causes it, but I dont really care anymore. For some time I thought it was my brakes, or my driveline rubbing because there was a ncie scar on it.

I say dont worry about it. I'm curious if it does it in 2WD tho...

Somebody else care to try????

Well that makes me feel a lot better! I guess i'll just avoid recovering stuck trucks in reverse from now on. I never remember it happening before. Oh well. thanks for the input.

Ok, here's my theory.

Reverse gear has quite a bit of torque, and when a gear has torque in it the frame will slighly twist when you first start off. Since the frame will twist one way when you go forward and the opposite way when you go backwards, maybe it's a body mount/bushing that only makes that noise when the frame is torqued in reverse.

First of all, the video works with the latest divx,

Second, thats some hard core wheeling

Third, the noise doenst sound that bad, perhaps a loos body mount? It sounds like something scraping along a bolt to me. Well good luck with it. Maybe dig a mud pit back there for the next video.

I dont think it's a body mount or bushing or anything like that. If I continute to accelerate/move backwards, the noise will continue until I let off of the gas. Maybe it still is my rear brakes. Who knows!

Kford:

Have you had your rear brakes checked recently?

back in January they were sticking pretty badly so I had a full servicing on them, but I suppose they could be acting up again.

Just wanted to let you know that you guys, along with a few other forums I post in, have killed my website!! Not really, it's just that my friend's web site provisions me only a little bandwidth for it and w/ all these movie downloads, I exceeded it. Good work. This tells me that a lot of you guys downloaded the movie but didn't post Shame on you.
