I have a 2nd gen 4runner and sometimes after driving i get a whif of fuel. i have changed my plugs (not much in the lines of soot), there is no milkyness on my oil cap, and i am not going through oil. the smell mostly originates from the rear of the vehicle. I have checked my fuel tank and no leaks are present. so any ideas? bad gas cap? i cant figure it out,.any help would be great

 

Maybe it is the charcoal cannister part of the emissions system.

 

I had the same problem on my rig (2nd Gen) a while ago. Check out the thread ....turned out to be the O rings.

There is a rubber hose from the filler neck to the gas tank..think it is the drain back hose? but anyway...mine was cracked...dry rotted. smelled mostly near rear right door.
