i was using a screw extractor to pull out a broken off zerk, then me being an idiot i broke off the screw excractor in the zerk hole.

ive tried drilling it out but im just making the problem worse.

any ideas?

 

Try a reverse twist drill bit.

 

Where is the zerk?

 

ill try that, but if all else fails ill take it to a shop.

can any auto shop do it.?

but the zerk is on the rear driveshaft at the very back.

Isn't that the zerk that is recommended you remove w/ the SS lift kits?

 

yes it is, but i lubed it up an forgot to put the allen head screw in it.

 

Ouch. I assume the zerk broke off and you cannot get any type of wrench or vise grips on the outside? I'd try a professional if you've already messed with it and can't get it...don't fubar it up anymore if you don't have the tools.

mine was broken off when i did my lift, still havent got it out yet. let me know what you do to get it out.

i was thinking soaking some pb blaster in there, then using a screw out. after that, get a new zerk and fill it and put the smooth cap screw in

 

i WISH it would be that easy.

the ez out broke off in the hole so i have no way of screwing it out now.

i have to drill out the screw extractor then use another extractor to get that out.

im just going to take it to a shop tomorrow so i dont do more damage.

 

I did the EXACT same thing a few weeks ago and I have the EXACT same suspension. I lost the little allen screw months ago, but I never had an issue with breaking a zerk off until I went to lube the drive shaft this time.

I certainly don't have a solution for you, as I still have the extractor buried in the stump of the zerk. I thought about carefully Dremel-ing a hole in the extractor so I could get a left hand drill bit into it.

It would certainly be easier to get to if you pulled the shaft out. Most machine shops could get that thing out for you. A good mechanic can as well, but a machinist has likely done hundreds of broken bolt extractions...

It's better if you didn't break the ez out inside the zerk, as the ez outs use a really hard (yet brittle) tool steel, and may require carbide cutters etc.

A well equipped machine shop can get that out without farking the whole thing up.

yeah there is no way i can drill through the ez out my my tools.

its way to hard.

 

If you have a spring-loaded center punch use that, thats what I do at work and it works 90% of the time.
You want to hold it at a slight angle and snap it two to three times off-center of the bolt, fitting, etc., whatevers stuck.
If you don't have one, they are not too expensive, I use Starrett's, they are adjustable and have replaceable tips, try Mcmaster-Carr if you can't find one at www.mcmaster.com or MSC.
If it doesn't work, shoot it with some penetrating oil, let it sit and try it again.
You can get some good drill bits at the same above locations, buy some stuff and use it, it will cost you the same as paying some shop to do it and then you still have the tools!
