How to remove OUTTER door handles...?

I've searched for how to remove door handles, but the only threads I've found are talking about the INNER door handles. I'm getting rid of all the chrome (see my sig... ) and I want to replace the outter handles with all black ones. Has anyone done this and if so, how did you?? I'm betting the inside panels have to come off, which kinda sucks because the two screws in the armrest must be pretty dang hard to get back into place.

I've found the door handles...now I just need to know how to replace them.

BTW, the dechroming is coming along well. Did the side view mirrors the other day and it looks factory perfect. Seems I've gotten the old rattlecan down at this point. Did the front grill already, the rear license plate surround and will do the valance next week hopefully. I'm probably gonna hve the bumpers powdercoated and I don't think painting them will work very well. Overall, looks great...couldn't be happier!

Just them dang door handles are sticking out like sore thumbs now. Help, please!

Take the door pannels off (follow the instructions to take the inner handles off and remove the snap rings for window cranks if you have them). After that there are a cuple bolts holding it on from the inside and if I remember corectly they have bars attached to them some how. I recall it is hard to reach up and get at the bolts and they are typically a bit rused on. That's about all I konw.

After removing the inner door panels, the outer handles are bolted in place from the inside. Remove the two 10mm bolts in the back of the outer handle and remove the retainer clip from the rod. From there, pull the bottom of the handle out first while pulling down and the handle should come out.

Thanks for the tips, guys...doesn't sound THAT hard, but seeing the inside of the door, it looks a little tight. May be a little hard to get access 'in the dark.' I'll get to this in a couple of weeks, I'm thinking...

I found the handles on eBay sold by a company called Tennessee Auto Sales. Here's the link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33642

Check out their store...they seem to have handles for just about any Toy, probably other cars, too. I wasn't able to find their own website (I hate, hate, hate eBay), so I will probably contact them directly to purchase them. They have them listed for 15.95...not a bad deal.

Those handles look nice and why do you guys keep putting more mods into my head. Im liking the idea of de-chroming the rig. One thing i want to is get some black rims.

Good question. The rear handles don't have a keyhole. I'll have to make sure before I take the plunge. Thanks for bringing that up!

And sludge, I know, man...I've always farked with the cars that I've had. The cool about the Runner is that there is plenty of stuff to do. And if you want black wheels, paint 'em! That's what I did. I used a drill wire brush to remove the crap/rust/etc, then primered them and painted them. Did that this summer and it's held up beautifully. The nice thing is that it can be touched up at any time. Works and looks great, IMO.

I agree with you. There are so many things you can do. But i have the aluminum wheels so i wont be painting those. I'll head to the junkyard and pick up some steel ones to paint.
