how much life is left on the 3.4?
i recently check the compression on my runner and one of the cylinders is in the 60s, the rest are somewhat low as well, 90s-110ish.
how much life is left realistically?
should i sell this thing whiles its still running ok?
or buy a rebuild kit/ used engine and just fix it?
thanks

How many miles on it? Depends on so many things.....whats the rest of the truck look like? You know.... for example, my Ducati has super low compression on one of the cylinders but everything else on it (chain/sprockets, batt., tires, etc, etc., is new so its worth rebuilding or buying a used motor).
If you've owned the truck for a while, invested money into it and know it well i'd say keep it. Rebuild it (buying used is a gamble and you could be in the same boat soon). At the end you should have an almost new truck. Now....if its beat, you just got it, you know of a bunch of other things wrong with it just craig's list it in a hurry while it still runs.
I guess you could also drive it into the ground then part it or used it for parts, sell it, etc....
First though I'd take it to a mechanic and have him check it out.... could be a stuck valve or something. I had a 525i BMW once that has a buttload of miles on it and low comp on one of the 6 cylinders, took it to my guy, he tinkered with it and the comp came up by 20.

well its got 236k, ive had it for about 3yrs, truck looks great w/ the exception of paint fade on the roof, and everything that i know of works great. Im just kinda torn between keeping t vs. selling it bc i love the thing but i wouldnt mind getting a 1st gen runner to replace it.
also, i put it off a dealer w/ 199k, so i have no svc history other than the 3yrs ive had it

I would definitely get the compression test done again but with the throttle wide open and a dollop of Marvel Mystery Oil in each hole before running it. The compression numbers might read more true that way.
I know that my truck has 178K on it and it is running strong. Needs a T-belt, water pump and transmission flush. No doubt it has another 100K left in it.
But when it is done...1uzfe. All the way.

You could sell if, but how much could you get for it with 236k? $3k?
May as well just keep it and drive it until something major happens. If the engine dies in a year and you dont want to replace it you could probably part it out and still come out okay.
But yea, I would agree to get another compression check done.

I think you've owned it long enough to know it well....I agree with what the others said too. As far as getting a 1st gen (as your only and daily driver)? I went the other way... I did have an 85 and sold it to get the 2000 3rd gen. In my situation, lots of city and frwy road trips it was hard to live with.
