My friend's timing belt broke on his 3.4 last week in his '99 Tacoma and it just shut down and he had it towed to the dealer and got it fixed with no problems. This happened at highway speed so obviously the answer is non-interference.

My Brother's Timing belt broke on his 3.4l(super-charged) while running wide open(racing). He had it towed! There was so much backpressure when his belt broke, it blew out his muffler bearing and the a/c seals around the vents. The cuncussion force on the engine backfiring bent the tie rods and twisted the frame like a pretzel. So we removed the engine replaced the belt and water pump(also the cam and crank seals). Then we proceeded to swap the motor into a Cub Cadet. He can now go 0 to 15 in .3 sec. and squall all four tires in the wet grass! I can cut my whole 3 acre yard in under 15 minutes and that is making 2 stops for gas and cigs! It broke, we replaced and no damage was sustained expect the cracked timing cover(cracked around the lip). That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!

Mine has never been changed and is currently at 145K+. As a graduation gift to myself I bought the parts and will be changing the TB, H2O pump, drive belts, plugs and plug wires on Saturday. The best part about it is I was able to get all these parts plus coolant from the Toyota dealer (except the plugs) for right at $200.

I just turned 116k on my 99 - I have had the parts for a while but the TB has slid down the priority list. One of these rainy weekends it will get done!!

BTW - Book on the TB is 2.5 hours - I was told by A friend (Subaru Service Mgr) that one of his mechanics said that it only takes an hour - start to finish.

I would expect that anyone that works on their vehicle regularly and has done the timing belt already, at least once, could do it in an 1 to 1.5 hours.

My 92 Escort (that i ran to 280K), 1st TB took 7 hours, 2nd took about 3 hours, 3rd was down to 1.5.

When I bought my '96(used) I called Toyota to see if they did the head gasket recall. It was done at 90k. I would assume they did the timing belt at that time. Im at 146k and I plan on doing it or having it done at 200k.

Wish me luck

Anybody know of a good guide, or book I could pick up, about doing a timing belt. I have never done one before, and my truck is only at 70k, when the time comes, I would rather do it myself. Thanks,

Just about any manual (Haynes, etc) will have a good writeup on how to do a timing belt.

Here are a few other links for you:

Why wait till it brakes.Put the 75 dollar tow bill toward the parts.I think more of my truck than that.Let your belt go that long why bother changing oil.See how long the oil will last to,.Makes about as much sense!

well i told them that i was having some belt squeaking issues when cold and starting in the low range rpms so they did some more diag on it and found that to be the issue.. plus i asked for resurfacing of my brakes too so it wasnt just oil change exactly but i wouldnt have thought of timing belt...
