Bruce... you're right, I did forget.

My dealership recommends timing belt replacement at 90,000 miles. I'm almost at 60,000 so they told me to wait a couple years. Right now to have it done there would cost $220.

One hour! ......I'd like to see that.
If you can even do it in 2 you'd make serious $$$$ as a mechanic.

I got mine done at about 96k. I was told by the Toyota dealership that the 3rd gen 3.4 liter is a NON interference motor. Anyone know the official word on this? I have 150k now and need to replace asap if it is an interference.

According to the Gates (Gates makes timing belts) guide link mentioned earlier, the 3.4 is an interference engine, the 3.0 is a non-interference engine.

That's my understanding too but I haven't tested the theory. The 3.0 only has 2 valves and the 3.4 has 4. My guess is that the 3.4 is a higher compression engine too and hence would be more likely an interference motor.
I just had the Dealer do the belt because I was lazy and was going to have them do an alignment anyway. Turns out they refused to do the alignment and already had the motor apart when they called me.

Something about too much lift and suspension changes. Whimps!

The 3.0 from 88-95 is a non-interference engine, but the 3.4 from 96-02 is an interference engine. The 4.7 from 03-present is a candidate for trouble as well.

Intresting that that particular site says it's a interference engine and another site I found says it's not, I always thought the 3.4L were non-interference. I guess when I get the time I'll check with the spare engine in my backyard...

The owners manual recommends replacing the T belt on a 3.4 at 90k miles.

It is an interference motor wo I wouldn't chance going much over 90k....its asking for an expensive repair.

how much did you guys pay to do your timing belts? I heard guys paying somthing like $500 to do that repair. I guess once I have that done, I might as well do that TFAL fan mod to.

The belt itself is about $35 online, or probably $60 at normal dealer prices. Figure 2-3 hours of labor, at $75/hour and you're at about $210-$285.

For what it's worth, I called 2 dealers here and they both confirmed the 3.4L as non-interferance.

I follow the suggested intervals. Too expensive of a vehicle to chance it

It is a non interference motor.....not sure why it would be stated otherwise.
