I have a 1999 3rd generation 4Runner SR5V6 that has 81,000 miles on it.

I am taking it to the dealer for a timing belt and water pump replacement, and am wondering what other belts there are that can/should be replaced at this time?

What other belts would you recommend that I change at this point? What other belts are there on this V6 engine?

You may want them to check out your cam belt as those can wear out around 100k.

 

(3) other belts can and should be replaced, assuming you have AC.

 

 

What are these three other belts? Yes, I do have A/C.

 

Crank -->ALT

Crank --> AC

Crank --> PS / FAN

Something like that anyway.

Just take a look under there, you can see what each one does.

Why replace it at 80? 60K is the maintenance interval.

 

Yeah, 60k is the recommended service interval for the timing belt, but keep in mind that this is a Toyota that we are talking about. I would just keep driving it until the timing belt broke, but the local dealership is running a special for the timing belt replacement, so I thought I would do it now while I can get a good price.

60k interval is way too conservative. I think 90k is more reasonable/realistic.

 

Ahh so you neglected the 60k change

90k is fairly conservative also. Plenty Camrys and Corollas rolling around with 200k on original belts.

 

In that case, do you think that it would be a good idea to just keep driving until your timing belt breaks, since it would be a waste of money to change it if your timing belt could be good until 200,000 miles?

 

If I were to make a bet, I'd bet that even at 120k your original belt will be fine. You live in an area with good weather for all rubber things. Ultimately you need to make the decision if a few hundred dollars now are worth more than possibly being stranded somewhere in the future.

 

My dealership said that 90k is good on a 3.4 belt. I am going to wait until then.
