Well, a friend has a 88 Toy p.u w/ a blown engine. I thought that he had sold it a while ago.... nope, he still has it. The local volunteer fire dept. (he's a member) is gonna use it for training. He is giving me the aisins off of it. Yeah, I said GIVING.
Here is the question.. I have to go out there tomorrow afternoon to pull them. Do I have to remove the tire/rims to get the hubs off? I dont think so, but want to be sure. I'd hate to go all the way to his place w/ no floor jack.
I'm pretty sure I'm clear on the rest of the hub removal. Any input, as always, will be GREATLY appreciated. Just to recap:
1) pull the 6 10 mm. nuts and the end cap.
2) pull the 12 mm. nut or c-clip on the end of the axle.
3) remove the cone washers, pull the hub off.

Yep, that's what's involved. A good sized hammer and (optional) brass drift will probably be needed to knock the cone washers loose.

When I did mine I took all the nuts, bolts and flat washers off, then put the nuts back on the studs where the cones are. Then whacked the side of the hub in the order of top, bottom, right, left till the cones were loose. The nuts keep the cones from flying off , never to be found again and to protect the threads from the hammer. When they were all loose I used two heavy duty screwdrivers to pry the hub body loose, then take the nuts, washers and hub off.

If it has a blown engine, I'd be interested in the rest of the truck (aside from the hubs ) !!!
I'd be more than happy to drive up and tow it away. I'd even give your friend some cash for it.

Ummm... HaveBlue, we are in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Depending on where you're at in Colorado, thats gotta be ABOUT 1.2 to 1.5k ea. way.
If you're still interested (knowing that) I'll ask him about getting rid of it. He had made the comment to me that he didnt sell it to the guy interested because he "wouldnt feel comfortable selling it, there is so much wrong with it" Take that for what it's worth....

 

Distance doesn't bother me. It's an excuse to go on a road trip . I appreciate the warning though.
I'd like to know what else is wrong with the truck if possible. If you could pass me an e-mail address or phone number, I'd be more than happy to talk to him. Or if you could tell me, that'd be fine, too.
