How to bring the new 4runner home? QUICK!
#22
Thanks for all your advice, I really appreciate it. I think I am going to try for the temporary tags and drive it at least to the MA border. I spoke with my insurance company about it and they said MA does not recognize temp tags, and I will get a fine if I drive it in MA. I suppose at that point I could just throw on the Tacoma plates and try to drive in such a way so as to avoid notice...or trailer it from there, that might be cheaper.
If all goes well you guys should all be seeing my "Check out my new 1st gen 4runner!" post by Sunday latest!! Thanks again.

ok here is my experience on buying cars out of state and bringing them back in. ... the whole process sucks, unless your buying a new car. Usually there is something wrong with the car .. dead battery, flat tires, no motor oil (or some other fluid), lights don't work, windshield wiper doesn't work (sucked when it was pouring outside).
The easiest way is to get a Uhaul trailer. When they ask what your towing tell them its 1991 honda crx. Flatbed trailers are the best, b/c you can throw any vehicle on top and your good. But a tow dolly might work best for you. A lot of times Uhaul won't have one in their national system. Check though. But then go to the local uhaul place and tell them its for a local tow, and then they'll be more then happy to give it to you.
I don't know how the temp tag thing works in Pa, or in Ma .. but in Md you have to have tittle in your name in order to get the temp tag. So call up the Pa tag places and make sure it'll still work if your out of state resident. I wouldn't worry if temp tags aren't allowed in Ma ... after all theyre going to be Pa temp tags, so they have no jurisdiction. Just don't draw any extra attention to yourself.

In PA it's illegal to do major business transactions on Sunday's. We're a commonwealth and this falls under our antique "Blue Laws". You'll either have to get your paperwork done on Saturday or hold out until Monday. Although Monday's a holiday, damn europeans thinking they found something new and claiming it as theirs
, so you might have a hard time finding a notary that's open.
I can't say I've ever seen one at some place that sells beer and live bait. Generally you got to a corner used car lot, or a lot of auto repair places do notary work. The garage I worked at in High School had a notary public. And we'd get people all the time that needed an "in-transit" plate. Basically it's a cardboard license plate that is valid for 30 days. Then when you get back to your home state and go to the DMV you take the PA paperwork and they issue you a local tag.
