I put a new (remanufactured) 3.0 into my 90 runner last September. It had 92K miles on it, now I'm at 100K. Since the install, I have been burning way too much oil, I have to add about a quart every time I fill the tank. I had a compression/leakdown test, cylinders 1-5 are around 160psi, 6 is at 115. The leakdown showed that the exhaust valve on 6 was leaking.
Now I gotta pull the heads, and send 'em back so I can replace them with new ones, per the engine company (Jasper Engines).

Any thoughts on what may be the issue, and whether or not the heads may fix the problem?

Off the bat, PCV system is good, new PCV valve (jsut replaced 2 days ago), cleaned throttle body intake was not oily, no visible oil leaks.

Sounds like the valve seats may need the carbon removed if it truely is the #6 exhaust valve. Could you talk to Jasper and get them to pay a local shop to do the work?

Update on the '88: I've installed a 1" Body Lift, I'm bringing the freshly rebuilt motor home Monday, and I've installed an alarm! I wanted to say thanks again for working with me on the price! I'm excited about wheelin' it this summer!

The dreaded #6 exhaust valve burn.... I had it happen I ended up pulling the heads and having a 3 angle valve job done. Once you burn the valve seat you have no choice but to grind the seat again and have the valve either ground or replaced.

 

If you didn't burn the seat and the valve is just not fully closing , you can buy thinner shims from the dealer that will let the valve close fully. If you have the valve covers off that side, and #6 TDC, the shim on top of the vale lifter should spin freely. You can even remove the shims without removing the cam.
