Here's Nose Drive Bearing Part Numbers (1st gen S/C)

Post Here's Nose Drive Bearing Part Numbers (1st gen S/C)

Just an FYI for all the do-it-yourselfers out there:

Instead of just shelling out $170 for a remanufactured nose drive, I figured I'd do a littel research. I assumed that all a new nose drive was, is an old one with new bearings and seal, boxed with some special gasket compound and oil. So I decided to bite the bullett and tear mine a part to see what could be done. You see, we have a local bearing shop that has every bearing ever made, so I figured that odds were in my favor.

After pulling it apart this is what I found:

UPDATE:

Front Bearing P/N: NSK 6204 ($3.71)
Front Oil Seal P/N: CR 7965 ($3.25)
Rear Bearing P/N: NSK 6303 ($6.27)
Lockrite Gasket Maker: ($6.00) - Anaerobic - 'for aluminum'
*4oz S/C Oil: ($7.00 )

*Any GM parts dealer, Info courtesy of Magnuson.

TOTAL cost for complete nose drive rebuild...PRICELESS (Under $30.00)

I actually got Koyo replacement bearings, I'll UPDATE with the proper cross reference P/N's later today.

UPDATE:
It looks like the model numbers are the same for Koyo and NSK, like somebody else mentioned.

Yup, but with a socket, an BFH, and a little TLC, you can tap them out no problem. We didn't bother using the press, I just get nervous when I can't tell how much pressure is where, just imagine cracking that aluminum housing :pat:

Koyo uses the same industrial standard bearing numbers as NSK. It should be a 6402 as well.

Then you're back where you started. No big deal (except to the wallet). It's not like it's an irreplaceable, out-of-production part.

You could even have one machined up if you cracked the original.
Might cost you a few $$$ though.

Yeah, it wouldn't be the end of the world if something happened, you'd just lose your core deposit. I just wanted to point out that you can still do this yourself even if you don't have access to a press. That might scare some people off from trying it.

:pat: Ok, don't hate me, I didn't have my digi cam when I took this all apart, and now it is nicely installed on my S/C, which is on my rig... :pat: I should've thought about a write up. Sorry I'm not worthy to be a YT member.

To redeem myself though, if someone is thinking of doing this, they can mail me their nose drive and I'll happily do the swap for them, and do a write up. Any takers???? Mine was a 1st gen S/C, but I assume that the 2nd gens should be just as easy.

What's so special about this oil? My supercharger uses standard 75w-90 gear oil.

Judging from the looks of the oil, 75w-90 would be WAY too thick. Magnuson, the company that makes the S/C, recommended only using the specified oil for it. I believe that it is a special full synthetic blend, but I can't say for sure.

Thanks, the seal is from a local bearing specialty store, I don't think they do internet ordering though, I could act as a middle man if anyone is interested in purchasing some.

Some superchargers use engine oil. Some use gear oil. Some are tapped into the engines oil system.

The Eaton superchargers have a sealed gear box and they use a special synthetic oil that has about the same consistancy as water. The GM dealer is the best cheapest place to get it from.

mhawker, I searched YT forums and came up with one hit and it wasn't your write-up. This was on a 1st Gen S/C - I'd have to see it to believe it.....

I know this is an Old thread..... but does anyone know if replacement bearings and replacment numbers are the same for the 2nd Gen S/C as for the first? I'm about to replace my bearings in my 2nd Gen (makes a bad bearing sound) and wanted to use these part number references...

bump, i have a 2nd gen with 115K miles on it. I want to replace the bearings before they go bad. Anyone know if the part numbers are the same?
