We've had some heavy rains this past few months, and the carpet in the back/bed of my 1999 4Runner is SOAKED after it rains. I have no idea how it's getting in. I don't drive the truck much, so it's not getting splashed in. There is nothing drilled into the roof, and the rubber looks completely intact on the doors and tailgate. The floor and the headliner are dry . . . it's just the very back, behind the rear seats.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Get a buddy and a hose and try to find out where it is coming from. Do you have a sunroof by chance? If so, check it well and make sure the drains are clear. You may have to remove some interior panels to find your leak. Also, just like a metal roof on a house, your leak may be in the front somewhere and traveling all the way to the back. Good luck.

Do you have a factory roof rack ?? remember a while back a few have had leaks around the ends and it was making the headliner wet too, is yous wet ??
Also check around the tailgate to be sure all the weather stripping is in place.

I had this problem once. There are vents on the back edge of the rear quarter window. These vents are supposed to let air blow out but not let water and stuff in. They're mainly used when the climate control is set to 'fresh air' and not 'recirculate'. You can turn on the air full blast on fresh air and close all the doors. Then walk back to the rear quarter window and you'll hear air blowing out. For me, tiny leaves got in there and plugged up some drains. Back end carpet got wet every time it rained. I had to pull the rear quarter window to clean it all out. So that's another place to check. You can pull the inside panels off and see if water's coming in around the window.

CST. I had water get in mine and everything was sealed tight. It rained so freaking hard once that the water either worked it's way through the rear window or somewhere else and pooled a little on the cargo cover. Never did find the source. And this was AFTER the 12 sheets of* Second Skin on the roof.

 

4-Runnin' Freak has a good point. We've had so much rain here on the West Coast that some could have blown past seals. For me I knew it was a problem because it leaked EVERY time it got wet. Even in a light rain. Pulling the inside panels will show you if water has been leaking down in areas. Good luck!

 

I wash my truck with a pressure washer sometimes, and never had the problem though. The rain was so heavy is sounded like hail. I am wondering if it can actually rain harder than what a high flow pressure washer can push out and into things.

 

it was really soaked in the back - i don't think it was because of the unseasonal weather - there must be something wrong causing the leak.

 

Water still could be coming in behind the head liner and running down the sides to the carpet without making the head liner to wet, so may want to check that area when your testing with the hose thing ..

If you don't think you can find the leak, it probably won't hurt to check there too. Maybe water is somehow running along the hose and dripping off to a point on the headliner and then making everything all wet. It would depend on how you are parked too, on a hill, flat.
EDIT: I am trying to give you a picture, but it's not working. There are hoses that are in the truck to drain the sunroof. Maybe AT the point where the hose slides on, water is slipping through and travelling alond. Make any sense?

 

arrrgghghh im having the same problem, and i think i ruined my amp.


i park on a hill, (front higher than rear) and recrently ive been getting tons of water on the rear wheel well, on the passenger rear side and under the passenger seat. all seals look good, it has a place for a roof rack, but none ever installed, the headliner looks good, there is standing water in the rear cargo space passenger side.

arrrgh.

 

BTW, its a 96 SR5 with everything but leahter.

 

also try things like the taillight assemblies. These are things that can cause leaks on other Toyota vehicles (happened on a Tercel that I owned into the trunk).

 

mine seems to be coming from the rear passenger door, it may be leaking in the rear as well though, cause its wet in the back too...

just recently started, none of the rubber looks gone, but it doesnt look new either...

im gonna try and do a water test as soon as itll stay dry around here for more than a day.
