im installing my tjm 15 right now. not going well. i dont know about you guys, but i cant get the bracket on the passenger side on without removing the factory tow hook. well the 2 bolts holding it are stripped now that ive tried getting them off with a breaker bar. what do i do!!!!????

 

Saw them off and go get two new grade 8 bolts from Toyota.

 

would drilling them out be easier? i dont have access to a powerful saw, but i do have access to a powerful drill.

 

what do you do? whatever it takes really. sawzall, drill it out, chisel, lol. theres really nothing you can do to 'save' it since they're stripped. just get something powerful and get them out.

 

I'm sure that would work, but it might be kind of a pain since they are stripped. I had one strip in the frame and I took a sawzall to it.

 

Sears sells a stripped bolt out set. If they aren't that rounded out you might have a chance. A good tool to have anyways.

PB blaster is your friend too

question, does the frame mount bracket that comes with the tjm mount on the inside or outside of the bumper bracket attached to the bumper?

Double check that you are turning it the right way...I have never made that mistake myself of course, I did not just do that putting a TJM on someone elses truck this past weekend, I am just suggesting something for you to do...

 

When youre upsidedown under a truck its kinda disorientating which way is loosey and which way is tighty.

no i cant get the stupid freaking bolts off. ive tried drilling, to no avail. by the time i got to being able to go to sears, it was too late. i really have no idea what im going to do. i need someone with a powerful saw/grinder, whatever to get these bolts off. pics:

 

those don't look too bad .. tonight repeatedly soak them in pb blaster .. don't get the cheap stuff ... and do it in the morning as well. then take it to a shop with an impact gun and have them take it off

 

well i couldnt get any pb blaster tonight. walmart doesnt carry it (or at least i could find it). so tommorrow ill head to lowes (i assume they have it?) and maybe i can get them off myself.

 

Ohhhhhhhhhh - you rounded them off, not stripped! Whole different problem - at least to me anyways...(usually when they strip there is some bolt exposed that you can get a saw on).

Your options are:
- The "new" designed wrenches that grip on the flat instead of the corners
- A screw extractor set (drill a hole then use a special tapered reverse cut drill bit)
- Those new Craftsman jobbies that are basically a backwards drill bit
- Some of those "size fit em" sockets like GatorGrip (I don't think this would work)
- Dremel a groove in it an use a straight screwdriver
- Blue wrench (aka torch)

Being that these are Grd 8 (metric 10.9) bolts, probably torqued to beat hell, and possibly loctited, this isn't going to be fun. On the other hand, you should have a great sense of accomplisment when you get them out!

 

Just to let you know, those are 17mm bolt heads...

Last time I stripped a bolt, I just hammered on a POS socket that was the next size smaller. Luckily I have a handy-dandy impact wrench that took it off.

 

i just invested $300 in bolt,screw and nut removers at work.. theyre all matco tools so they cost alot but i swore to stop being screwed over by stupid bolts and junk.. im sure theyll pay for them selves soon.... i sure hope so

i tried the gator grip socket thing-nope
i tired the drill extractor set screw thing-nope
i tried with my big vice grip-nope
i tried drilling a hole through-nope

yikes i duno what to do. and yes i know theyre 17mm. that was the socket that was on, and the thing just rotated. i guess my sockets were too old or something.

hopefully ill figure out something. i really dont know what im going to do.

 

get someone that has one of the following:

1) Sawzall
2) Plasma
3) Torch
4) Welder (weld a nut on and use the welded nut to remove the bolt)
