As for the impact gun, well I tried to use one on this same nut on my 96 and the sucker would not come loose. So, I used my trusty breaker bar; the long handle to my floor jack. That thing has saved me so many times but it's pretty akward.

Jamie, what do you think about putting the x-fer case in 4LO in order to get this nut loose? Should be ok right? (For future reference)
Honestly, we never used breaker bars on stuff like that because we had an IR2131 gun (worked on about 90 percent of the stuff we encountered....CV axles and most engine and drivetrain fasteners) and if that didn't get that sucker off then we broke out a 3/4" IR2141 gun (it had 1200 ft-lbs in reverse!!!) which could remove even the most stubborn nuts with relative ease. My gut says you'd likely be fine, but I don't want someone coming back to me and saying I told them to try it and they broke something. If it was my truck and I didn't have an impact gun like that, I'd probably try and make an SST.
