Exclamation help!! my 4runner lost all power

i have 94 4runner with 83000 miles and about 2 weeks ago, it started to shake every time it was stopped. eventually it started losing power and now the best i can do uphill is about 20 miles an hour. i have changed the oil and filter; spark pligs; and the cap and rotor. we took each plug wire off axs the truck was running and it didnt make a difference when the wire was unplugged for the 1st and 6th cylinder. so we took off the valve cover on the right bank to see if the valve were tight and we measured the shims on each valve and they were all correct. my friends are mechanics at toyota dealership and they never seen anything like this. today i am going to change the wires but we are thinking that it could be the injectors and we are going to lookinto that next. also it is not blowing any smoke so we are ruling out that the head gasket is blown.

any suggestions or comments would be appreciated

First guess is the AFM or Throttle Body going bad.

Check the ECM for stored codes and post the codes found within. That will help in troubleshooting.

well the check engine light has not gone on and it wastes a whole lot of gas. you can even smell it when you get out of the car

O2 sensor?

Sounds fishy for only having 83K miles.

Any other history on the vehicle we should know about?

BTW: Nice username.

You should still check the ecm for stored codes. It sounds like it's running super rich or it's possibly not burning fuel because there is no spark. Check for spark on ALL the plug wires. If you have access to a shop manual, check out the procedure for testing the AFM and Throtle Body TPS.

The symptoms you are describing are almost exactly like the problem I experienced when the AFM and TB went out on my 87 Supra Turbo, which is why I'm suspecting those two items on your truck... You have a similar ECM style (OBD I) in your truck also.

Good luck.

Talking power has been restored!!!

we changed the spark plug wires and replaced some injectors and power has been restored! only issues left are a hard start and high idle but that will be adjusted by the end of the week.

to all that posted, your suggestions were greatly appreciated

thanks

Good to hear, Dude!

Check your timing while you're in there.

Was it the sparkplug wires or the injectors that fixed it?

i am pretty sure it was the injectors because they were pretty clogged. its runnning better than it has ever while i have owned it, way more responsive. the spark plugs and everything else was just icing on the cake.
